Storm related Air conditioning and other sensitive electrical appliance faults/prevention.
With storms approaching the hills I thought it might be informative and hopefully save people some issues. This goes for anything electrical and not just air conditioning.
If a storm/lightning is nearing your place and you have any electrical appliances that are not needed or critical to have operating at the time. Unplug them if possibly or for air conditioners and the likes, switch them off at the outside isolator or even at the your main switchboard circuit breakers.
*please note: having things “switched off” doesn’t guaranty they are safe from spikes and surges. But it can reduce the chances of damage occurring.
Once storm has passed if the power grid is unaffected you can plug things back in or turn back on.
If the power network has been impacted and is out, leave these items unplugged and off until the power has been restored. Then once power has been restored, start switching and plugging things back in one at a time.
If you find your air conditioning unit faults or fails to start once the storm has passed and power has been restored (if there was an outage or spike), don’t panic!
First thing is to isolate the power to the system either with the outside isolator switch, or systems circuit breaker in switchboard (if no isolation switch) for a, ****minimum 5 minutes****.
After that 5 minutes, switch isolator/CB on and start the unit as normal.
If this does not clear the fault, feel free to contact me for further assistance.
Also another note to be aware of, be careful what generators you are trying to run air conditioning units on.
Modern air conditioning units have very sensitive electrical components and pcbs’s. Some generators can produce “dirty power” (very broad term) which can damage these sensitive components.
If you would like anymore information or have any faults, I can help you with your air conditioning and refrigeration requirements.
