Listen, I’ve been doing this for years, so let me save you some pain.

1. Measurements. Get them checked twice, maybe three times
2. Outlets. Know exactly where they sit before anything else is decided
3. Veneer and colour. Never trust a screen or a showroom light. Take the sample home, look at it morning and night, then decide.
4. Flat-pack. Cheap now, trouble later. It warps, it sags, it never ages well. Spend once, spend right.
5. Handles. Choose them early, not as an afterthought. They shape the whole face of the piece, sometimes even how the doors swing.
6. Rails. Soft-close, always. Single sheet metal will have you slamming doors within a year.
7. Kickers. Small detail, big job. They take the scuffs and the water so your base doesn’t have to.
8. Corner space. Don’t let it go to waste. Hang something there, or shelve it if you’ve got the room.
9. Drawer fronts. If you’re mixing finishes, check the material first. Mismatched tones show themselves fast.
10. Circulation. In a walk-in, avoid doors
11. Style. Whatever you build should belong to the style of the house
