Australian wood ducklings leave their tree hollow nest within 24 to 36 hours of hatching.

Driven by the mother's calls from the ground, they make a dramatic, fearless leap from heights of up to 10 meters straight down to the earth or leaf litter below.

They launch themselves into the air, tumbling and fluttering down; their low body weight and fluffy down mean they typically bounce and walk away completely unharmed.
