7 Star new homes will be the new energy efficiency standards from October 1st 2023.
Why do we need these changes now?
Energy efficiency standards in Victoria must continue to evolve to meet:
• the needs of our rapidly transitioning grid
• the impacts of climate change
• our commitment to a net-zero future.
Why do we need new homes that are more energy efficient?

7 star homes are:
• cheaper to heat and cool
• more comfortable to live in
• more resilient to extreme weather.
Households can expect to save hundreds of dollars a year on energy bills.
Lowering the amount of energy that a house needs to run will:
• reduce greenhouse gas emissions
• reduce the pressure on our electrical grid and
• support the transition to a net zero emissions future.

Changes From 6 stars to 7 stars is happening!
The minimum standard for the thermal performance rating of all new homes will be increased from 6 Stars to 7 Stars, making homes cheaper to run, more comfortable to live in and more resilient to extreme weather.
The Code will also require a ‘Whole of Home’ approach to managing the energy use of fixed appliances, such as heating, cooling, hot water, and lighting. This approach allows for flexibility in choice of appliances, including fuel type and energy efficiency rating, and onsite renewable energy (such as solar panels), combined to meet an annual energy usage benchmark for a new home.
NCC 2022 will be available from 1 October 2022 and will commence on 1 May 2023, with a transition period to 1 October 2023.

Understanding Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.
* Solar panels capture the energy of sunlight which is converted into electricity. This is known as a solar photovoltaic (PV) system, usually called solar PV. Solar PV technology is a source of price-competitive, zero greenhouse gas emission energy for homes and businesses across Australia.
* Australia is an ideal location for solar PV systems. One in 4 households now have solar panels on their roof – the highest uptake of household solar in the world (Clean Energy Regulator, 2020).
* Solar PV systems can be stand alone or can be connected to the grid, with or without batteries.
* It is important to get the right sized system for your household. Most households install a 3–5kW system.
* The position and angle of the panels will affect their efficiency. Where possible, panel frames usually face north and are usually fixed at the optimum tilt angle, which depends on your location.
* Systems should be installed by accredited installers, and regularly cleaned and checked.
