In bushfire-prone areas of NSW, the 10/50 Vegetation Clearing Scheme gives homeowners a practical way to reduce fire risk by clearing vegetation — all without needing council approval!

** What’s Allowed**
• Within 10 metres of your home’s external walls: You may legally remove trees that meet the definition under the Code — a perennial woody plant over 3 m in height with a trunk circumference of more than 30 cm at chest height.
• Within 50 metres of your home: You can clear underlying vegetation (like shrubs and lower-growth plants), excluding trees.

**Quick Tips**
1. Before clearing, use the NSW RFS tool to confirm your property’s eligibility.
2. Know the boundaries—measure distances from external walls, including attached structures like decks or garages.
3. Respect exclusions — if your property or vegetation falls under restricted categories, you must seek alternative approvals.
