Get your system set for summer.

Summer’s not far off, bringing the heat, the heatwaves and the higher bills, but your solar and battery are built for exactly this. A few small habits now will help you get the most out of them.

The simplest trick is to run your house on your own sunshine. Through the middle of the day your panels are at their most productive, so that’s the time to pre-cool the house and run the pool pump, dishwasher and washing machine, rather than buying from the grid later when rates are highest.

It’s also worth a quick battery check. On scorching days the grid comes under strain, so blackouts are more likely just when you need power most. Make sure yours is set to keep the essentials running if the grid drops.

One that surprises people: the hottest day isn’t your best day for solar. Panels are rated at 25°C, and once they heat up on the roof their output actually drops a little. A bright but mild day is when they perform at their best.

Bigger batteries, more in every module.

Good news from the battery world. Two of the brands we install, Sigenergy and GoodWe, have just released larger 9kWh battery modules, up from the previous 8kWh. That means more storage packed into each one, so you get more capacity from a similar sized system, more backup through a blackout, and plenty of room to grow later with their neat stackable design.

The two we’re fitting are Sigenergy’s new SigenStor 9kWh module (8.76kWh usable) and GoodWe’s new 9kWh module (8.7kWh usable), both pairing neatly with their matching inverters.

Thinking about a battery? With the bigger modules now available and eligible households able to access the federal battery incentive, the numbers stack up better than they have in a while.

A recent install we're pretty proud of.

This one was an Adelaide Hills home in Crafers: 13 x AIKO 535W panels, a GoodWe single phase 10kW inverter and a 41.6kWh GoodWe battery made up of five 8.32kWh modules.

With two storeys and a unique roof shape, it was a great challenge for our team, and a tidy result we're really happy with.

Did you know selling back your solar can help cover your supply charge?

Every power bill has one charge you can't avoid: the daily supply charge, a flat fee you pay every day just to stay connected.
The good news for solar and battery owners is that every kWh of surplus solar you send back to the grid earns a feed-in credit that helps offset that charge, and on the right plan you can cover it entirely.

Not all plans pay the same for exports though, so it pays to find the right one. And the golden rule: use the power you can first, then sell what's left, because using your own solar saves you more than exporting it.
