FROM THE LIMESTONE COAST, TO YOUR HOME.
Over the past three weeks, we've taken you behind the scenes at Gambier Stone Supplies, showing where our limestone comes from and the work that goes into turning it into building stone.

From the limestone beneath the ground at Compton, through the quarrying and cutting process, to the finished blocks ready for construction.

But that's not where the story ends. It's where another one begins.

In homes across the region, locally quarried limestone becomes part of something much bigger. Walls that give a home its character, natural textures that make every building unique, and a material that reflects the landscape it came from.

Gambier Stone Supplies. Bringing the Limestone Coast home.

Quarried. Cut. Stacked. Ready to go.
What starts beneath the ground at Compton eventually reaches this point.

Limestone ashlars prepared to leave the quarry and become part of building projects beyond it.
That's one of the things we love about Gambier Stone, the journey isn't very far removed from the place the stone actually came from.

Local stone, prepared by a local team.

Cut to order. Ready for what comes next.
From above, the finished limestone ashlars at Compton create a pretty impressive pattern.

But every one of these blocks has a purpose.
Gambier Stone Supplies cuts its ashlars to order here at the quarry before they're delivered to the client or building site.

From a quarry floor in Compton to someone's next project.

Not everything happens from inside a machine.
There’s still plenty of hands-on work involved in taking limestone from the quarry and turning it into a finished product.

Cutting, handling, checking and preparing the stone are all part of the process carried out by the team at Compton.

It's the part of quarrying you don't always get to see.

So, how do you turn limestone into building stone?
This is part of the answer.

At the Compton quarry, limestone is cut into ashlars to suit the requirements of each order.
And yes, that saw is every bit as big as it looks.

A pretty simple process to watch from the outside, but one that takes the right equipment, experience and a good understanding of the stone being worked.

There’s a lot more to a quarry than the finished stone.
Before anything can be cut, stacked or delivered, there’s plenty of work involved in developing and maintaining the areas we work from.

From this angle you get a pretty good idea of both the scale of the Compton quarry and the ground being worked around it.

Different part of the operation. Same end goal.

A look beneath the Limestone Coast.
One of the most impressive views at the Compton quarry doesn’t involve a machine at all.

As the quarry has developed, the limestone layers beneath the surface have been exposed, giving us a pretty remarkable look at the material this part of South Australia is known for.

The stone that eventually becomes part of a building starts right here.

This is where Gambier Stone begins.
Just outside Mount Gambier at Compton, limestone is quarried and prepared for building projects across the region.

Quality Mount Gambier limestone has been extracted from this district for around 100 years, and today Gambier Stone Supplies continues that connection between the ground beneath us and the places being built around us.

Over the next few weeks, we’re going to show you a little more of what happens here.

DID YOU KNOW?
One of Port MacDonnell’s most recognisable landmarks has a connection to GEM Group that stretches back nearly 20 years.

The Bay Wave was carved by local sculptor Ivo Tadic from a single piece of Mount Gambier limestone weighing around 50 tonnes.

The enormous monolith came from the Stafford & Earl quarry at Compton, the quarry and stone business that would become part of what we know today as Gambier Stone Supplies, within GEM Group.
It took 16 days just to cut and prepare the stone for removal. It was then transported to Port MacDonnell in one piece and lifted into position using two cranes before being officially unveiled in March 2006.

At the time, it was the largest single piece of stone ever to leave the Stafford & Earl quarry.
Almost two decades later, The Bay Wave still welcomes people into Port MacDonnell, a pretty remarkable piece of local limestone, local craftsmanship and Limestone Coast history.
