Outback QLD Flowers

Outback QLD Flowers My record of growing a cottage/flower garden in North West Queensland. Full sun, full heat gardening.

Cleared out a garden bed for my mother in law and planted out some of her seeds to claim back this area. Fingers crossed we see some little green shoots popping up soon and that I spaced them vaguely evenly!

And that the winter will give them a good chance to root in for a strong, prolonged spring/summer season.

Pretty pleased with my first gingerbread fairy flower cottage, made from scratch.

I took a great many photos of each step, just in case it all fell apart on me. There is a lot of icing ensuring that it didn’t.

Pretty proud of my first attempt at making a vanilla slice, and my first time making custard completely from scratch. Something I think I’ll be doing again for sure.

Other than a lot of frantic stirring, it’s not too complicated. And now I’m left with the discarded egg whites, I suppose I’ll just HAVE to make meringue. Such a sacrifice, I know, but we mustn’t be wasteful. It’s the responsible thing to do when you’re in a cost of living crisis.

For sure though, need to get chickens and encourage another local mum to get a dairy cow she doesn’t mind sharing the milk from. Or just win the lotto and create a Marie Antoinette style play farm at the end of my inevitable and endless garden estate.

In the meantime, it’s good fuel for actual garden planning and getting into the yard before the heat really hits today.

We had a community Run Against Violence / Family Fun / Health Opportunity event yesterday that was heaps of fun. The lovely QCWA ladies made the smoko and these were my contribution.

The kids got a special set directed and popcorn filled movie night in the Lounge the night before, and mama had a peaceful and calming couple of hours making and shaping dough. And taste testing.

Another flowering, perennial plant that is worth planting a lot of out here in the hot and dry outback. Lisianthus.

Came back for a visit to find weeds and the main irrigation pipe popped off the timer. Resulting in some very hard, dry ground and lots of dead and crispy plants. Not surprising in our over 40 degree heat and ‘Extreme’ UV index and the full sun aspect of my garden.

But the Lisianthus? Blooming and beautiful. And considering the amount of aphids on my Queen Anne’s lace, shockingly insect free. The flowers are beautiful in whites, peachy tones, pinks and purples and the foliage is a lush blue green.
