Ross Mars is the Managing Director of Water Installations Pty Ltd, author, teacher and Doctor of Environmental Science, with many years in the field of greywater and wastewater. His research centred on the use of native wetland plants to strip nutrients from domestic greywater. He leads a team of expert technicians who carry out all residential and commercial water installations in WA. Ross also has qualifications in Permaculture, and offers general Permaculture courses (Permaculture Design Course) as well as Accredited Permaculture Training. 🚫 MYTH: "If my ATU or STS is working, it doesn't need servicing."

✅ FACT: Whether you know your system as an Aerobic Treatment Unit (ATU) or by the Western Australian Department of Health's updated term, a Secondary Treatment System (STS), regular servicing is essential to help keep it operating as designed.

A system can appear to be working while hidden issues are developing.

During a routine service, a qualified service technician will:

✔ Inspect pumps, blowers, alarms and other key components
✔ Clean filters and other serviceable parts
✔ Check the treatment process is operating correctly
✔ Assess the condition and quality of the treated effluent as part of evaluating system performance
✔ Check the disinfection system is operating correctly (where fitted)
✔ Identify worn or failing parts before they become costly breakdowns

Regular servicing should be carried out by an authorised service technician in accordance with the system manufacturer's recommendations and applicable Department of Health requirements.
