For many living with chemical sensitivities, this is not just an inconvenience, it leads to profound loneliness, loss of community, and barriers to basic participation in life.
When safe environments are limited, people are not choosing isolation, they are being excluded by environments that make them physically ill.
Many people living with fragrance sensitivities experience something that is rarely talked about:
Social isolation.
When everyday environments contain fragrances, cleaning chemicals, or other triggers, simple activities like visiting friends, attending gatherings, or entering public spaces can become impossible.
Research has shown that these environmental barriers can significantly impact a person’s ability to maintain relationships and participate in everyday social life. Studies have found that limited access to safe spaces can lead to the loss of existing relationships and difficulty forming new ones (Gibson et al., 2011).
For many living with chemical sensitivities, the result is not just inconvenience, but a loss of connection, community, and access to everyday life.
Understanding these challenges is an important step toward creating more accessible, fragrance-free environments where everyone has the ability to connect, participate, and belong.
The more people who understand, the more accessible our world becomes. Please share to help others understand the importance of going fragrance-free and the real impact it has on people’s lives.
