Don’t forget: moisture is the enemy! Proper water management can often get overlooked in the excitement of installing new windows. It’s best not to cut corners, if water gets in behind your walls it can be too late before you realise it has caused big (and costly) problems. Not only your home, but also your health (water = mould issues). It’s worth going the extra mile to make sure your windows and walls are protected: taking the time to install additional flashings, thoroughly paint exposed timber before adding architraves, and making sure everything is properly sealed can save you major headaches later. It’s best to protect your home by making water management a top priority when you’re renovating.

It was a pleasure helping to revitalise the hallways in this mid-century farmhouse in Maranup. We replaced the cracked and sagging ceilings and installed two Art Deco-inspired ceiling roses and decorative “Concerto” cornice for extra impact. We also repaired wall defects and prepared the walls for painting. Our customers decided to keep the original light fixture, which looks great. After painting and the beautiful original jarrah floors were restored (a fantastic job by Blechynden Timber Flooring), the hallways now look stunning!

Looking back at one of our favourite projects from 2024, when we helped our lovely customers complete their kitchen transformation in Bridgetown. The new picture window lets in so much natural light and frames a view of their trees. Our customers’ choice of dramatic dark cabinetry and a vibrant teal splashback looks stunning! The finished space is a stylish, functional kitchen that’s perfect for for their love of entertaining.

The owners of this beautiful period home wisely addressed the less “pretty” aspects of maintaining and restoring their circa 1935 homestead first. They fixed all the roof leaks and resolved drainage issues, renovating “from the ground up”, which ensures longevity and the structural integrity of the building. Next they focussed on restoring the more visible areas of their home. The ceilings were sagging and cracked, and needed repairing while preserving the stunning original ceiling roses and colonial cornice.

We lifted and secured the ceilings, flushing over cracks and repairing any defects to the cornice and roses by hand. We also repaired cracks to the mortar above the elegant fireplaces. It has been a genuine pleasure to meet the lovely owners and help to bring this beautiful home back to its former glory.

We tend to go over and above with PPE when removing ceilings or cleaning up in ceiling spaces. We originally used regular half-face respirator masks, but after a day in the heat and heavy dust, it just wasn’t comfortable at all and the dust always got in. Today we use the 3M Versaflo Respirator Helmets, which are battery powered and maintain a positive pressure to keep constant airflow going in and the dust out. We use them while taking down ceilings, installing insulation, doing demolition, and cutting silica board (to name a few). Sometimes we will come in to work after the asbestos crews have removed material, and we’ll wear the Versaflo after they’ve been if we’re ever unsure about material we’re drilling into etc.

We’d recommend Versaflo masks to anyone doing construction work, they’ve come in very handy and we use them often. The cool breeze is like air con when it’s hot! We’ve also entertained some client’s kids with our get up—one little girl asked her mum if the “astronauts” wanted some homemade banana bread. (Yes we did, and it was delicious, thank you to our lovely clients!)

When restoring a period home, where should you start? The answer is, generally not where you want to! Most people want to start with the pretty stuff, such as the new kitchen or the heritage-style bathroom. But if you do this before fixing the “ground truth”, you are just putting expensive lipstick on a very unstable pig.

I spoke on this topic last weekend on behalf of the Heritage Skills Association, as part of the Australian Heritage Festival. In ’Top Tips for Owning a Heritage Property’, I discussed how to get heritage home renovations right from the ground up, touching on structural issues, soil and moisture management. We also dove in to some interesting financial statistics about how construction costs and maintenance spending have changed over time. It was hosted in the heritage-listed Old Observatory, which is a beautiful building with a lot of interesting history.

Sincere appreciation to the Heritage Skills Association for hosting me and for the support from National Trust WA and Heritage Council WA. Thanks to the National Trust Wa, Australian Heritage Festival, Heritage Council WA and the HSA for all of their work to make the festival a success!

𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧! Our lovely clients in Bridgetown found that their separate walk-in pantry and laundry weren’t offering them enough space and functionality. By completely changing the layout to an open plan design, their combined laundry/butler’s pantry renovation has vastly improved workflow and offers so much more storage. We also installed a new larger picture window which provides a gorgeous view over their garden. Our client’s bold colour choice of navy cabinets with feature teal splashback looks stunning!

Our client had a clear vision of the transformation she wanted to achieve through her living and dining room renovation—a beautiful, cosy home which was functional and reflected her unique style. A major consideration was energy efficiency, to keep the house warm in those chilly Bridgetown winters!

We assisted with numerous phases of the project, including removing the gable windows and replacing them with cladding. We installed two raked suspended ceilings, which allowed for increased insulation and energy efficiency. We also installed a decorative dado rail, which highlighted the new double-glazed windows.

The final result is beautiful - so warm and cosy. The rooms are filled with natural light and beautiful views of the garden. We really enjoyed helping our lovely client create this beautiful space for her and her family to enjoy.

For this project, we removed a large window for our Bridgetown customers who wanted to change up the layout of their bedroom. After removing the window, we installed a new internal wall and replaced the external cladding. Our customers were very happy with the final result, which looked fantastic and really brought together their outdoor living area.

Sharing some recent progress pictures: It has been a pleasure working on this beautiful 1905 home with its original lath and plaster walls. In the hallway we replaced the colonial cornice and ceiling rose, staying true to the original design. We’re looking forward to seeing the final result after painting—it’s been a true enjoyment working with these lovely customers to restore their beautiful period home.
