$500 vs $100 who wins?

Insulation is a relatively cost-effective part of the build that can make a big difference to comfort, energy use and reducing the risk of condensation and mould... if it’s done correctly.

But unfortunately, too often it’s just chucked in the wall without much thought going into it, leaving a lot of those benefits on the table.

Handy little trick for the series 500

When we framed this area, we fixed timber to the steel like we normally would.

Luckily, Jessica, our Passive House consultant, picked it up and the timber needed to come out so we could continue the insulation across the steel and further reduce the thermal bridging through that area.

It’s also a good example of why we have a Passive House consultant involved throughout the build.

There are a lot of small details that go into building this way, and another experienced set of eyes on the job means things like this get picked up before they’re covered over.

We’d much rather pull it apart and fix it now than find out later we got it wrong after the cladding went on.

Surely I’m not the only one who feels like we’re losing a lot of the old skills because we’ve become such a throwaway society.

Something goes blunt or breaks, and instead of learning how to fix it, most people would rather just buy another one.

Sharpening a chisel is only one example, but it probably says a lot about where we’re heading.

You might not always enjoy the stage you’re at, but the decisions, mistakes and small wins are usually the parts you appreciate most when you look back.

It applies to everything - Finishing your apprenticeship, starting a business or building a home.

It’s easy to become so focused on the destination that you forget to appreciate what it takes to get there.

A few people had a lot to say about the cavity roof system.

Mostly that the battens were going to rot.

So instead of going back and forth in the comments, we tested it.

We installed a moisture reader into the battens and monitored what was actually happening through wet weather, high humidity, cool mornings and warmer drying periods through the day.

The important part isn’t whether timber ever sees moisture. It will.

The real question is whether that moisture gets trapped and stays there long enough to create the conditions for decay.

That’s where the cavity system matters.

It gives the roof build-up a way to manage condensation, drainage and drying, instead of relying on moisture being trapped where no one can see it.

This test was done here in Newcastle, so different climates and details may behave differently.

But on this roof, with this cavity system, the battens are doing exactly what they’re meant to do.

Moisture is not automatically the problem. Trapped moisture is.
