🌺 Waratah (Telopea spp.)
Waratahs produce large, nectar-filled flowers that are irresistible to honeyeaters, wattlebirds and other nectar-feeding birds. Insects also visit the blooms, adding to the food web. The strong, shrubby structure provides shelter for small birds and reptiles. Flowering during cooler months, waratahs deliver vital energy when food can be harder to find.

🦗 SPECIES PROFILE: CICADAS 🦗

You’ll hear them long before you see them.

Cicadas are famous for their loud buzzing calls that fill Australian summers, especially after rain or on hot, humid days. But despite the noise, these fascinating insects are completely harmless to humans and pets.

Here’s what makes cicadas so unique:

🔍 They spend most of their lives underground
Some cicada species live beneath the soil for years, feeding on tree root sap before emerging for just a few weeks as adults.

🎶 Only the males sing
That loud chorus you hear? It’s the males trying to attract a mate using special sound-producing organs called tymbals.

🌳 They’re important for the environment
Cicadas help aerate soil as they emerge and provide food for birds, reptiles, and other wildlife.

🪶 Their shells are often found on trees
After emerging from the ground, cicadas shed their outer skin as they transform into winged adults — leaving behind the empty shell many kids love finding on tree trunks.

While cicadas don’t damage homes, large numbers around trees and gardens are a normal part of Australia’s natural ecosystem.

Love them or hate the noise… cicadas are one of the true sounds of summer. ☀️

Have you been hearing cicadas in your area lately?

Winter is here, and if you have a fireplace at home, this is your reminder to check it before you light up! 🔥🏠

Every year our rescue team responds to calls involving wildlife found inside chimneys and flues. 🐾 Possums, birds and other small animals seek out warm, enclosed spaces as the temperature drops, and a chimney can look like the perfect hideout until someone lights a fire below. 😔

The good news? It is so easy to prevent! 💚

Before your first fire of the season, here is what to do:

🔦 Grab a torch and check inside your chimney and flue for any signs of an uninvited guest
🛡️ Fit a protective mesh or screen over the opening as a long-term solution
🏡 Put up a possum box in a nearby tree to give them a safe, warm alternative to your home

This little one was lucky. Found safe and uninjured thanks to a homeowner who checked first, and the chimney is now screened and wildlife-proofed for good! 🙌🐨

If you find injured wildlife, please call our 24/7 ☎️ Hotline on 5527 2444.
Together we can make sure everyone stays warm this winter! 🌿🐾💚
