The Mill Lane Precinct in Glenorchy is a workplace ‘village’, consolidating multiple parts of St Vincent de Paul Society’s Southern Tasmanian operations. Maguire + Devine Architects have brought order and delight to a complex brief, placing the wellbeing of the employees and volunteers at its heart.

The 2,500m2 adaptive re-use warehouse conversion acccommodates supported employment workplaces, regional office, board room, training room, emergency relief hub, commercial kitchen and facilities for Vinnies Loui’s food vans, and two retail stores. Each retains a distinct identity, while shared spaces - kitchen, dining hall, garden and amenities build a sense of collective belonging across the organisation.

All spaces throughout the precinct are designed with empathy and care. The design process began with close observation of existing workplaces, identifying spatial, environmental and operational shortcomings. These insights informed a series of targeted interventions to improve comfort, safety and dignity.

Daylit interiors, high ceilings and clear spatial organisation promote orientation and ease of movement. The interiors feature natural plywood linings, exposed pine framing, indoor plants and opportunities for personalisation of individual workspaces. Heat recovery ventilation ensures consistent fresh air, supporting health and wellbeing.

Reaching back to 2018 and the Bruny Island Hideaway!

A seminal project for us, showcasing our approach to crafting simple yet highly experiential projects that seek to connect people to the places they love.

In detail

Completed in 2022 on the outskirts of West Wodonga, the design of this home creatively responds to restrictive title covenants and the site’s humid subtropical climate.

The covenants required a minimum of two thirds of each wall be clad in masonry - seemingly at odds with our client’s desire for a light-filled home with generous windows and views.

Our response was to create a strong, anchoring perimeter: a robust masonry envelope that shelters a serious of intimate courtyards and pocket gardens within. To the north, a masonry ballustrade to the deck and verandah provides privacy while reinforcing the home’s grounded, enduring character.
Insulated, double-layer masonry walls extend into the bathrooms, blurring the line between inside and private garden spaces.

With hot days and cool nights in summer, thermal performance was key. A western masonry wall shields the home and terrace from harsh afternoon sun, absorbing heat by day and releasing it in the evening to warm the outdoor living spaces. Nearby, a courtyard with an operable timber screen creates a shaded play space in summer, opening to welcome winter sun.

Set on the northern edge of a retired quarry on Bruny Island, this holiday home is centred on regeneration. The damaged landscape will heal through revegetation and rehabilitation, including the introduction of wetlands and ground cover to support wildlife. For people, the architecture provides both intimate spaces for retreat and rest, and generous gathering spaces for the extended family.

The architecture features a long, linear plan and is simple, poetic, and robust. Exterior materials weather to soft silver tones, echoing the site’s fallen timber, tree trunks, and the washed-up driftwood of the nearby coastline. The interiors are rich and grounding, with cork and terracotta floors and pale timber walls. Carefully placed windows in lieu of expansive glass create apertures to the surrounding landscape and distant views, maintaining a sense of intimacy and protection.

Mid-Century River Home

Seventy years after her parents built the beloved waterfront home, our client entrusted us to sensitively enhance this cherished place. The original living room framed mountain and river views, but only the small kitchen and bathroom faced north. By drawing a north-facing courtyard into the heart, the architects created a shallower plan, seamlessly linking kitchen and living with natural light. Patched myrtle floors, double-glazed timber windows, and carefully chosen joinery honour the home’s story—sunlit, warm, and unmistakably familiar.

Due for construction this year.

A considered addition to the north of this heritage-listed Battery Point home gently stitches a light-filled dining and living space between a renewed kitchen and the compact garden.
To maintain a strong visual connection to the garden from indoors, a new terrace is located to one side where an existing brick wall provides privacy from a side street.
A green roof over the new garage enhances biodiversity while providing a vegetated foreground to the stunning long views to Knocklofty and Kunanyi / Mt Wellington.
The new structure sits below the existing eaves and features painted steel shading fins that introduce proportions to the glass facade that are sympathetic to the federation home.
New masonry elements uphold the granduer of the old home, while the neutral tone clearly expresses old and new in quiet dialogue.

A Secluded Tasmanian Forest Retreat

This elevated retreat is nestled in the Tasmanian forest, strategically positioned above the flood line with steep hills rising behind provides a sense of prospect and refuge.

The home is oriented to the north to capture year-round sunlight, creating a warm, cozy interior while powering the off-grid solar system. This positioning offers views over natural mossy wallaby grass clearings down to the creek’s edge. Masonry blade walls anchor the home to the site, allowing the natural landscape to flow uninterrupted beneath the structure. Upon arrival, visitors leave their cars at a discreet parking pavilion and proceed on foot via an elevated walkway through the bush, leaving the outside world behind.

The first floor features glazed sliding walls that open the internal spaces to the outdoors, inviting in the scents, sounds, and fresh air of the forest. The lower floor is dedicated to personal wellness, featuring a sauna and a plunge pool with a natural filtration system, offering a tranquil space to recharge and connect back to nature.
