Breakthrough for Zelda on North East Link!

Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Zelda has achieved a rousing milestone with breakthrough into Manningham box at Bulleen - completing the excavation of the first of two three-lane tunnels. 👏

Launched in August 2024, Zelda has travelled over five kilometres to excavate the north-bound tunnel. Along the way, 2,576,166 tonnes of rock and dirt were excavated, and 22,060 tunnel segments installed. 🪨

Meanwhile, TBM Gillian is following closely behind with almost 90% of the south-bound tunnel excavated.

With TBMs operating 24 hours a day, this milestone speaks to the commitment, precision and safe practices of the crew working with Spark North East Link. 💪

🎉Congratulations to our team and delivery partners in Suburban Connect on winning the ISC Excellence Award for Governance Outcomes for Suburban Rail Loop East (Tunnels South)! 🎉

This award recognises a governance approach that delivers real practical results. By locking financially backed KPIs into leadership decisions from day one, the project has driven strong outcomes across sustainability, social impact and delivery.

What made the difference?

🌱 Carbon reduction at scale with a minimum 20% cut across Scope 1–3 emissions, plus low‑carbon concrete and renewable‑powered precast
🛠️ World‑first engineering, with ground freezing built into design to reduce energy and carbon use
👷‍♀️ Real social impact, including the world’s first all‑women TBM crew and strong outcomes for First Nations and local suppliers
📚Lasting legacy, sharing research and lessons to lift industry standards.

We’re also proud to see Cross River Rail – Rail, Integration and Systems recognised as a finalist in the Governance Outcomes category, and Spark North East Link as a finalist in the Excellence in Economic Outcomes category — a great reflection of the impact our teams are delivering.

Well done team! 👏

Big build moment in the nation’s capital. 💪

The Canberra Metro Light Rail Stage 2A project team has reached a major milestone — completing the installation of a new watermain across the full width of Commonwealth Avenue in Canberra, using an ACT-first construction method.

What happened on site?

🔧 18‑metre watermain prefabricated above ground.

🏗️ Single 10.3‑tonne lift installed on each side of the corridor, removing the need for open trenches and underground boring under the road.

📐 Detailed planning for preparation works including lifting, welding, concrete encasement and backfilling.

🌍 Excavation of 1,000 tonnes of spoil and soil in the city centre.

This smarter approach reduced disruption and improved safety, while keeping the project moving.

The work supports the delivery of a wireless light rail extension that will modernise Canberra’s public transport system, alongside CIMIC Group partners Pacific Partnerships and UGL.

Progress you can see. Infrastructure built to last.🚊

We’re proud to recognise National Reconciliation Week 2026 and this year’s theme, All In.

It’s a reminder that reconciliation takes all of us – through the way we work, connect and support one another every day.

At CPB Contractors, we’re committed to creating opportunities and building strong partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

This week, we were pleased to host representatives from the Clontarf Foundation, sharing stories and insights that reflect the importance of working together to create meaningful outcomes.

A connected project on Sydney Metro West - Eastern Tunnelling Package (ETP). 🤜🤛

Delivered in joint venture with John Holland and Ghella, constructing TBM tunnels beneath Sydney Harbour and excavating Pyrmont and Hunter Street stations.

All ETP sites are now fully connected following a complex adit breakthrough at Hunter Street West shaft. This marks the shift from excavation to permanent structure.

Progress deep below the city includes:

🔩 Station cavern form having started the first arch crown pours
🧱 Lining works continuing through 380m of turnback tunnels beneath The Domain
♻️ Bulk excavation at Hunter Street East and low‑carbon concrete backfilling of temporary access tunnels
🏗️ First fully concreted arches in the 148m Pyrmont crossover cavern
⚙️ Cross passages complete from The Bays to Hunter Street and tunnel boring machines demobilised at Hunter Street.

Careful planning. Tight sequencing. Extraordinary teamwork.
