This week we had a call out to inspect a property whose power was disconnected after it was found to be unsafe.
We identified the earthing for the property needed attention, after testing identified the connection to their earth stake was corroded and had failed.
Earthing is a supremely important component to your home's safety. Essentially, we want a continuous path down to earth from all conductive surfaces - taps, water pipes, even the metallic case of an appliance or washing machine amongst others - so that under a fault condition, the electricity makes its way as qu**ky and as easily as possible to the earth stake. In this case, that path was essentially blocked by the extremely poor connection. This is particularly dangerous in the sense that if you DO have a fault, the electricity might choose to pass through YOU if you present as the easier path.
As well as the poor earthing connection, we found a failed a safety switch.
Earthing and safety switches are amazing bits of technology that work together to trip a circuit that has gone to fault. Without them, you really are at an increased risk of shock under certain fault conditions
We repaired the earth connection and upgraded the switchboard to RCBO circuit breakers and today this client is arguably 1000x more safer than they were yesterday-
I also got a thank you text which is really appreciated- that takes our running tally to Luke Norman 1000, with me making a late charge at 6 π€£
If you have one of these clipsal safety switches still in service, chances are it's due for testing - if you haven't tested it, it's due!! We replace about 3 of these a week that have failed, and it is the back bone of your installation's safety - a quick test now can prevent a genuinely serious or even worse problem later!!
