Last Thursday was a great day to wrap up the planting for a job that was a continuation of a project done in 2020.
Oh... wait a minute. It was a bloomin' hot day and not great for planting. I had to water the poor, delicate Pratia 3 times to stop it crying.
The original scope in 2020 was to convert the straight edged garden beds to more like an adventure in such a small yard. We achieved that and our plantings have done well.
What didn't do well was the original Buffalo turf that was there before we arrived. Part of this is the new shade, but the main reason is that the development was on built up land that has compacted clay and rock rubble about 75mm under the surface. The next 75mm below the turf is washed sand and crusher dust. The Buffalo never stood a chance.
This week I chipped out the turf, laid stepping stones through the area and enhanced the dodgy soil with an organic material rich blend.
The plantings are all low ground covers.
Mini Mondo Grass
Creeping Thyme
Lysmachia
Viola hederacea
Pratia
Irish Moss (Sagina subulata)
The planting is mixed up though favouring each species preferred conditions.
I look forward to seeing how it develops and discover how many fairies have taken up residency in this delightful little garden.
