Dirt and Daisy Design

Dirt and Daisy Design A garden consultation and design business, providing information and resources to inspire and create your purpose-driven dream garden. to plant it.

I have always been interested in gardening, but my passion and knowledge really grew when I moved to Canberra, Australia, and was confronted by a bare balcony in my rental apartment. While I waited for my husband to join me, my bunny Honey and I got busy learning what (and what not!) to plant, and how (and how not...) I learnt how to grow carrots and tomatoes in small terracotta pots, and Honey le

arnt how to strip the bark off my poor little lemon tree. A few years on, and we have two extremely productive courtyard gardens. One is dedicated to Australian native and english cottage garden flowers and grasses (accompanied by Albert, our trusty almond tree!). The other is dedicated to all things edible, with fruit trees, shrubs and vines, herbs, vegetables and edible flowers... I love cooking with those ingredients, and creating recipes for the whole family to enjoy. Now I want to share my knowledge and expertise to help others develop and realise their own garden dreams.

Amongst highlight reels and ‘best of 2023’s, I’m going to finish the year a little vulnerable… [Read: Please be kind ❤️]

You might have noticed I’ve been posting less frequently for the last few months. I am tired. No, I’m exhausted. I am, in some ways, at or beyond my limits. My mental health has been suffering, and I’ve struggled to find the beauty and inspiration that I want to convey to you all.

I’m going to take a break from Dirt and Daisy and social media for January, and am so grateful for your understanding and support. My hope for the new year is to prioritise my wellbeing- that before long, I’ll be able to focus on the flowers again instead of the weeds 🌷 [And share with you some great pictures of both!]

I hope this might be a little virtual hug to anyone who is struggling or in a hard place right now. And a reminder for everyone else to choose compassion over judgement ❤️ I am grateful to have some beautiful supporters who have shown love and friendship- most without knowing their real and profound impact ❤️

And now, it’s time for tea and meditation ☮️

☀️ It’s well and truly Summer, and our agapanthus are a beautiful daily reminder ☀️

I know that in some places they’re considered a problematic pest species, but if you’re somewhere else and looking for a hardy plant that will thrive in the heat, these are your guys! 🤍 I throw some blood and bone and fertiliser on them when they’re dying back in Autumn, but they’re mostly neglected… I’m convinced they are flowering so prolifically is because of our bees 🐝 🐝 🐝

With the climate changing, we can all agree that the cheapest, most stress free way to garden is to choose the right plants for your garden. If you’re looking for inspiration, follow or DM me 🥰

☀️ Suburban homesteading and making memories… ❤️

This morning I was up early to enjoy a cup of tea in the garden- and had a lovely surprise when our son wanted to join me. From beautiful conversations about nature, love and cuddles, to picking the first tomato and using leftover milk on the zucchini’s to prevent powdery mildew… Memories I hope to hold onto for a long time to come 🥲❤️

Do you want ideas on how to involve your children more in the garden? Follow or DM me- I’d love to help 🥰

🏡 This is our suburban homestead in a bowl… And I’m so. Damn. Proud 🥹

After a long day between the kitchen and the garden, this bowl contains:

- Pesto from garden ingredients 🍃
- Home made mozzarella 🧀
- Home made pasta 🍝
- Home laid eggs 🐔

But, more importantly, it contains years of hard work, sweat, and plenty of tears 🥲

All home grown, home made or home raised. All organic, (extremely!) local, and entirely delicious. And now to sit back, 🍷, and take the time to be grateful for what I achieved today. And, let’s be honest, to plan for our next project… 😂

🌻 Sunday sunflower sneak peak from the Dirt and Daisy homestead 🌻

I’m glad we planted these ladies early given the very early start to Summer 🔥

As you might already know, nothing is planted here for only one purpose! These sunflowers:
☀️ Are bringing some colour to the street
☀️ Will feed the bees, and, if the 28’s (ring necked parrots) leave us any…
☀️ We’ll eat and press the seeds for oil

It’s looking like a slightly cooler week ahead, so it’s a great time to get any last minute heat loving plants in the ground (roll call for capsicums, chilli’s and tomatoes!) And remember to Seasol and keep up the water to help them establish healthy root systems ahead of the next heat wave ❤️

📻 If you’ve listened to the Seedy Chats podcast, you’ll know my Aunt and Uncle have been our biggest homesteading inspirations ❤️

From chickens, to bees, to veggies, the love that is poured into it all, and more 🐔🐝🍅🍳 They’ve shown us that it’s all possible, and that it’s a beautiful way to experience life as a family.

I hope that my account can give you all even just a little bit of the inspiration or confidence that they have given, and keep giving, us ☀️🥰

A hive check revealed that our queen 🐝 has been a very busy lady 🫣😂

With so many bees, plenty of pollen and nectar still about, and lots of space for them still to grow, we’re starting to feel optimistic that we might get some honey this season!

Best case scenario, many kg’s of honey. Worst case scenario, our fruit, veg and flowers are living their best pollinated lives. It’s kind of win-win, right? 😄

🥚 There are always jobs for little helping hands on our suburban homestead 🥚

Learning about nature, life cycles, colours, shapes, counting, patterns… They aren’t structured lessons, but opportunities for learning and growing at every homesteading turn. If you don’t have space for chickens, you could use different tomatoes, beans, flowers…. It’s limited by your imagination 🥰

🌸 I love using our upcycled cot side to dry homegrown herbs, garlic and even flowers🥰

Some of my favourites are cornflowers. They are not fussy with growing conditions, and are happily at home between our garden beds and under our fruit trees 🌳 They also hold their colour beautifully when dried, and make for beautiful cake and biscuit decorations 💜💙🩷🤍

They also bring some gorgeous colour to our otherwise very green display 🍃🍃🍃 If you don’t have a drying rack, you could just gently rinse and place on a baking cooking rack for a couple of weeks. Happy growing, and happy baking! 🍰

🍃 Home from one job, and onto the next 🌻

We work hard for our homestead so that it can work hard for us 😊 That means soil preparation for maximum nutrient and water retention. That means hot days are long days, watering early morning, and again in the evening.

But am I complaining about having a reason to spend more time in the garden? Definitely not! (And the mosquitos are pretty happy too 🦟😅)
