What electrical work should you plan before a kitchen renovation?

One of the biggest mistakes I see in kitchen renovations is leaving the electrical planning too late.

By the time the cabinetry is being built, stone has been measured and other trades are booked, the electrical layout is often being squeezed around decisions that have already been made.
That is when problems start.

A well planned kitchen is not just about how it looks. It is about how it functions every day, how safe it is, and whether everything has been thought through properly before the walls are closed up.

In a modern kitchen, electrical planning needs to go far beyond just picking where the oven and cooktop go.

You need to think about power points above the benchtop, whether the island bench needs GPOs, appliance locations, feature lighting, under cabinet lighting, fridge space, microwave position and whether the existing switchboard can actually handle the added load.

Island bench power is a big one.

A lot of homeowners want a clean, modern island, but they also want to use it properly. Phone charging, small appliances, laptops, mixers, air fryers, or even a temporary workspace for the kids. If GPOs are not planned early, you either end up without enough usable power or you are trying to retrofit solutions later, which is never ideal.

There is also the compliance side.

Power point heights, clearances, spacing from sinks and cooking areas, appliance isolation, and ventilation all need to be considered properly. It is not just about making things fit. It has to be safe, practical and in line with regulations.

Coordination is crucial too.

The electrician needs to work in with the cabinet maker, builder, plumber, tiler and the stone mason. Everyone has their part, but if the planning is rushed or disconnected, the homeowner is usually the one who feels it at the end.

I always say kitchen renovations are won in the planning stage.

A kitchen should not just photograph well. It should work properly for years to come, and be a space where you can enjoy time with family and friends.

Why does your power keep tripping?

If your safety switch keeps tripping, it is not faulty.
It is protecting you.

This is one of the most common electrical issues homeowners in Perth call me about. The frustration is real. You reset it. It works. Then it trips again. Especially at night or when you are using multiple appliances.
Here is what is actually happening.

Your safety switch is detecting an electrical fault. That fault is usually caused by one of these:

• A faulty appliance leaking current
• An overloaded circuit
• Moisture in an outdoor light or power point
• Damaged wiring
• A switchboard that is struggling to handle modern demand

Homes today are running air conditioning, induction cooktops, EV chargers, pool equipment and home offices. Many older properties were never designed for this level of load. When the switch trips, it is cutting power in milliseconds to prevent electric shock or fire. That is not an inconvenience. That is protection.

The mistake people make is repeatedly resetting it without identifying the cause. If it trips once, monitor it. If it trips twice, there is usually something behind it. If it keeps happening, it needs proper testing. Sometimes it is simple. A kettle. A fridge. An outdoor socket after rain. Other times it highlights a bigger issue like deteriorated wiring or an outdated switchboard.

The key point is this. Electrical faults rarely fix themselves. They usually get worse.

As a licensed Perth electrician, my approach is always to isolate, test and confirm. Not guess. Not patch. Not reset and hope.

If your power keeps tripping, it is worth understanding why. It might be minor. It might be preventing something serious.

Either way, safety always comes first.

Do I need to replace my old downlights?
This is another common question I get as a Perth electrician.

Short answer.
If they are older halogen lights, probably yes.
Here’s how you can tell without being an electrician.

If your home has:

• Yellow halogen globes that get very hot
• Lights that trip the circuit randomly
• Bulbs that keep blowing
• Ceiling insulation pulled back around fittings
• High power bills without knowing why

Your lighting setup is likely outdated.
Why this matters.

Older halogen downlights typically use around 50 watts per fitting. Modern LED replacements use closer to 10 watts.

In a standard Perth home with 20 downlights running about 4 hours per day, that difference can equal roughly $300 to $350 per year in electricity savings alone.

On top of that, halogens run much hotter, which increases fire risk if insulation is too close and puts more stress on the fittings over time.

The good news.
Upgrading to LED downlights is usually straightforward. It improves brightness, reduces heat, lowers power usage and modernises the look of the home at the same time.

As a licensed Perth electrician, lighting upgrades are one of the simplest ways to improve both safety and efficiency before issues arise.

If you are unsure what type of lighting you have or want to know whether an upgrade is worthwhile, feel free to get in touch or visit our website for more information.

With Perth’s housing market continuing to surge and median house prices passing the $1 million mark after close to 10% growth in late 2025, the demand for new builds and renovations across the city is clear.

On projects like this residential build in Mt Lawley, we are seeing firsthand what that demand looks like on site. Busy schedules, tighter timelines and the need to get things right early. That is why we spend time planning electrical layouts before walls go up and coordinating each stage properly. We have worked through quieter years and through periods like this where the industry is moving fast. When the market is busy, preparation, communication and doing the fundamentals well makes all the difference.

If you are planning a build or renovation and want your electrical work done properly from the start, reach out to us to discuss your next project.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard?
This is one of the most common questions I get as a Perth electrician.

Short answer.
If your switchboard is old, chances are yes.
Here’s how you can tell without being an electrician.

If your home has:
• White ceramic fuses
• No safety switches (RCDs)
• Power that trips randomly
• A burning smell
• Black asbestos panelling behind the switchboard
• Alternations eg. Renovations, A/C & Solar Installations connected to an existing outdated switchboard.

Your switchboard is likely outdated and no longer compliant with current Australian Standards.

Why this matters.

An old switchboard is one of the biggest electrical safety risks in homes. It increases the chance of electric shock, appliance damage and electrical fires. Modern switchboards are designed to cut power instantly when something goes wrong. Older boards simply cannot do that.

The good news.

Upgrading a switchboard does not mean rewiring your whole house. In most cases, it is a clean, contained upgrade that significantly improves safety and reliability.

As a licensed Perth electrician, this is one of the most important upgrades I recommend to homeowners before problems happen, not after.

If you are unsure about your switchboard or just want peace of mind, feel free to reach out or check the resources on our website.

Switchboard upgrade in Perth ⚡

With the hot weather we get in Perth, older switchboards can struggle and become unsafe over time. Heat, age and outdated components can all lead to faults or failed protection.

This upgrade includes modern circuit protection with individual RCDs, clearly labelled circuits and a setup that meets current safety standards. This is what a safe, compliant switchboard should look like in a home today.

If you have any questions about your existing switchboard or are unsure whether it meets current safety requirements, get in touch with us and we can help.

A recent addition over at our friends Chemform 🔧

We installed an emergency stop floor mat for a robotic packing machine, integrated directly into the safety circuit so the machine shuts down instantly if someone enters the area. A simple upgrade, but an important one when working around automated equipment.
