Maintenance:🪓
Now is the perfect time to give your tools a bit of maintenance, clean air and oil filters in petrol powered tools such as lawn mowers and sharpen blades on hedge shears and secateurs.
Just before winter sets in it’s also a good idea to remove any grime or dried sap from all your tools so they don’t corrode over winter.

Charlies Winter Pruning Tips:🍂
“I like to give my deciduous trees and shrubs a really good prune as you can see the shape of the plant and pruning them is much easier without the weight of leaves. I was once told, if you can make a tree look good naked then come Spring, it can only look amazing.

🥦Winter gardening presents unique challenges, but the reward of harvesting fresh produce even in colder months is worth the effort.
🥦If you’ve ever attempted to grow vegetables from the brassica family, such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, or kale, you likely understand the frustration of discovering your hard work reduced to a leafy buffet for voracious caterpillars.

These sneaky pests, adept at blending into their surroundings, can wreak havoc on your plants.

🌹Winter is the ideal time to prune your roses.
Pruning now will also prepare the plant for good growth and flowering come Spring time too.
Pruning serves several important purposes in helping to maintain the health and vitality of your roses.
By removing the old stems and controlling the size and shape of the plant, you are allowing it to focus on the new growth.

🌳Winter is a great time to transplant established trees and shrubs with the least amount of disturbance.

🌳When plants are dormant, or growing slowly, you can dig them up with little damage occurring, and transport them to a new garden or position. The cooler temperatures of winter also mean plants come under less stress during the move.

🌳Citrus, camellias, azaleas, deciduous ornamental, and fruiting trees transplant well at this time of the year.

🌿Prune Hydrangeas:
Prune hydrangeas after they’ve finished flowering in early winter.
Prune the stems back by about a third to a pair of strong healthy buds.
Do not cut back any stems that did not flower this year, they will be the stems to produce flowers over the coming winter. When pruning remove any dead, diseased or damaged growth.
Few shrubs respond as positively to pruning as hydrangeas; you can look forward to healthy flowering shrubs after a good rejuvenating prune.
