Design For Seasons Passive solar and sustainable building design in Western Australia. Buildings that harmonize with the http://www.designforseasons.com.au

A well designed sustainable passive solar home is perfect for the Perth climate, as we have plenty of sunshine, cooling sea breezes, and mild temperatures in winter. Design for Seasons offers a building design service specialising in passive solar, energy efficient homes and environmentally sustainable building design. Buildings that are thermally comfortable, energy efficient and as individual as

the owners. Passive solar heating is free when designed into a new home or addition. Designing for passive solar heating is basically letting the winter sun in the building and having that energy stored within a thermal bank such as concrete, brick, stone or rammed earth. This stored heat energy is slowly released back into the internal spaces as the air temperature drops, maintaining a comfortable indoor environment. As designers we need to offer the best for clients in energy efficiency and thermal comfort taking in to consideration all the other factors that influence the final design and build.

Our national building standards need to be overhauled to fight climate change and energy poverty – and improve our lives

The renewables landscape in Australia is about to radically change....lets hope the federal government can help facilitate this change or at least get out of the way and not hinder this change...

Australia doesn’t yet export renewable energy. But the writing is on the wall: demand for Australia’s fossil fuel exports is likely to dwindle soon, and we must replace it at massive scale.

The typical Australian nature strip can be more than just lawn. Some councils allow house owners to turn their nature strip into gardens with native planting or edible plants, creating diversity in flowers and greenery, increasing biodiversity. There should be more flexibility from all councils.

The nature strip is everywhere. A million small patches combine into a giant park spanning the city, making it a significant player in our urban ecosystems.

There are alternative building materials to double brick. Hempcrete is sustainable, a breathable wall that regulates indoor humidity, and has a high level of insulation.

Hempcrete materials provide many advantages over other insulation and wall envelope assemblies. Yet, there are many misconceptions surrounding its use.

WA is falling behind in new housing energy star ratings. The minimum 6 stars is not enough to meet future reductions in green house gases in the building sector, and not enough to reduce ongoing energy needs and costs in the day to day running of the house. It's not that difficult...just comes down to good design and some improvements on glazing and insulation!

New housing in Australia must meet minimum energy performance requirements. We wondered how many buildings exceeded the minimum standard. What our analysis found is that four in five new houses are being built to the minimum standard and a negligible proportion to an optimal performance standard.

Situated on a large open site in the Perth hills, this residential compound has sheltered courtyard spaces providing shade, natural light to the interiors and direct sun to these interior spaces in winter. A standout design feature is the skillion roof line. This roof design allowed for high level windows to capture northern sun in winter and provided natural light and ventilation into the interiors of the building.
