🔥 OK… WE’RE A LITTLE BIT EXCITED ABOUT THIS ONE.

Unwrapping our first shipment of Japanese Shou Sugi Ban timber cladding and, frankly, we think it’s super sexy. 😍🖤

For those wondering what on earth we’re getting so excited about…

Shou Sugi Ban — traditionally known in Japan as Yakisugi — is an ancient Japanese method of preserving timber by charring the surface with fire. 🔥

Rather than destroying the timber, the controlled burning creates a carbonised outer layer that helps protect it from moisture, insects and decay, while also giving it that incredible deep-black colour and beautifully textured finish.

Traditionally Japanese cedar (sugi) was used, with the boards charred, cooled, cleaned and then finished — creating a cladding that is not only striking to look at, but exceptionally durable when properly produced and maintained.

Basically…

The Japanese figured out centuries ago that sometimes the best way to protect timber is to set fire to it first. 😂🔥

Beautiful. Natural. Textured. Slightly unconventional.

Pretty much everything we like in a building material.

Now we just need to stop standing around admiring it and actually put it on something… 🖤🔨

🪵 FIRST BATCH HAS LANDED.

Our first run of bespoke-made structural timber LVLs is here — manufactured specifically for the way we build.

✔️ H3 treated
✔️ Lengths up to 8 metres
✔️ Strong
✔️ Straight
✔️ Durable
✔️ And ready to go wherever we’d normally be reaching for MGP10 or LVLs when the job calls for a little more muscle.

Because sometimes standard timber just doesn’t quite cut it. 😉

We wanted longer lengths, greater consistency, additional strength and something better suited to the demands of our builds — so we went looking for another solution.

And here it is.

Bespoke timber. Made for real-world building.

First batch on the ground… now let’s build something with it. 🔨🏠

Not every Little Castles home starts in a factory or inside a shipping container.

This one is a custom-designed small home, created specifically for a challenging corner block with a steep slope, rock beneath the surface, and a unique triangular building envelope shaped by the site and council setbacks.

Rather than fighting the constraints, we embraced them.

The result is a 100m² ground floor home with a 49m² mezzanine, featuring a striking non-geometric roofline that creates soaring ceilings, floods the home with natural light, and makes every square metre feel bigger than it is.

This is a great example of collaboration with .office and .studio to bring this vision to life!

Great design isn’t about building bigger… it’s about building smarter.

Construction starts soon, with completion expected in 2027, and we’ll be sharing the entire journey—from site works and structural framing through to the finished home.

HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY TO US!!!

It was 10 years ago that we built our first container home/granny flat for a client in Mosman Park, and dropped it (gently!) on top of a newly built garage.

At the same time, ‘Little Castles’ was ‘born’.

Since then we’ve built many small homes and granny flats, but we’re very happy to now be growing heavily into the modular/containerised and prefabricated small home space with Little Castles as its own stand-alone own entity.

Lots of exciting projects coming up, so watch this space! 😀😊

Our new 2-bed x 1 bath, design for a client in Fremantle is about to get underway.

Two 40ft high cubes make up the space with part of the second container opened on the side and end to form an integrated outdoor area.

Interiors coming soon….

With a 57mt reach for the crane into the back garden, it will be the biggest crane lift we will have done; only three cranes in WA can do the job!
