Many readers may have noticed a plethora of small moths flying out of the garden when watering either early in the morning or late evening. These could possibly belong to what is known as Lawn Army Worm, more specifically a caterpillar that decimates lawns and plants.
One of the first signs of an armyworm infestation is a flattened appearance to the lawn like it has been compacted or run over with a roller. Armyworms eat the foliage of lawns and can destroy a whole field in a week. If you look carefully the leaves will be chewed or cut off at the base.
A female army lawn moth can lay up to 150-200 eggs that later hatch into larvae (caterpillars), the larvae grow and develop through various stages, pupate, and emerge as adult moths. The lifecycle generally lasts for five to nine weeks, and with the extension of warm weather they are breeding well into autumn.
Caterpillars are smooth, soft and segmented with a round head and a distinct inverted βYβ marking on the forehead. In early stages of development, the caterpillars are 1 mm long, with a white body and black head. Instars gradually develop into a green colour with yellowish-white stripes extending from the neck to the tip of the abdomen.
Caterpillars keep growing up to 40 mm long with a greyish-brown body and dark brown head. The upper and lower sides of the body are green, grey and beige longitudinal stripes. On either side of the head are a pair of large, rounded, blackish-brown compound eyes.
To check for the presence of army worm fill a 9L watering can with water and a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid and pour over a 1sqm patch at night. Throw either hessian or material over the lawn and leave for an hour, lift to check how many caterpillars are underneath.
Products suitable to control lawn army worm are Eco Neem, Multicrop Eco Grub, Scotts Lawn Builder Lawn Grub + Insect, Yates Grub Kill and Protect for lawns, Yates Success Ultra Insect Control, Natureβs Way Citrus and Ornamental spray and Dipel.
