🏊‍♀️ POOL TIP BEFORE THE WEEKEND: CHECK YOUR CHLORINATOR CELL! ☀️

When was the last time you checked your chlorinator cell? 👀

Over time, calcium and mineral deposits can build up on the cell, especially in pools with high calcium levels or when the water balance isn’t quite right.

🧪 What happens when the cell gets built up?
A dirty or scaled cell can:
• Reduce chlorine production
• Make your chlorinator work harder
• Trigger “No Flow” or “Cell” errors on some systems
• Reduce the lifespan of the cell
• Leave your pool struggling to maintain a healthy chlorine level

🧼 How to clean it:
1️⃣ Turn off the chlorinator and pump.
2️⃣ Remove the cell according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
3️⃣ Check for white, chalky calcium deposits on the plates.
4️⃣ If needed, use a chlorinator cell cleaning solution or the cleaning method recommended by your manufacturer.
5️⃣ Rinse thoroughly and reinstall the cell.
6️⃣ Turn everything back on and check that it’s operating normally.

⚠️ Don’t scrape the plates with anything sharp! The coating on the cell can be damaged easily.

💡 Pro tip: If your cell is regularly building up with calcium, don’t just keep cleaning it - check your pool water balance, particularly pH and calcium hardness. The underlying water chemistry may be causing the problem.

A crystal-clear pool isn’t just about chlorine. It’s about getting all the different parts of your water chemistry working together.

For a typical Australian outdoor pool, these are the numbers we generally aim for:

🧪 Chlorine: 1 - 3 ppm
⚗️ pH: 7.2 - 7.6
🔵 Alkalinity: 80 - 120 ppm
💎 Calcium Hardness: 200 - 400 ppm
☀️ Stabiliser: 30 - 50 ppm
🌱 Phosphates: ideally

🏊 Pool Tip Before the Weekend: Clean Your Cartridge Filter!

When was the last time you cleaned your cartridge filter? 👀

A clean filter helps your pool:
💦 Maintain good water flow & circulation
✨ Keep the water clearer
⚙️ Reduce strain on your pump
🧪 Help your chemicals circulate properly
🔋 Run more efficiently

How do you know it needs a clean?

Keep an eye on your filter pressure gauge. If the pressure rises around 20–25% above the normal clean-filter pressure, it’s generally time to give the cartridge a clean.

Other signs include:
• Reduced water flow from the returns
• No suction when trying to vacuum / use suction cleaner
• Cloudy water despite your chemistry being balanced
• Your chlorinator shuts down and displays “No Flow”

How often should you clean it?

As a general guide, cartridge filters should be thoroughly cleaned fortnightly or at least once a month, but pools with lots of leaves, dirt, dust or heavy use may need cleaning more often.

👉 Best tip: After cleaning your filter, take note of the pressure on the gauge. This is your clean-filter baseline. When the pressure rises around 20–25% above that reading, it’s time for another clean.

The pool’s pH stabiliser 💧

Ideal range:
80–120 ppm

Too low?
⚠️ pH becomes unstable
⚠️ Can contribute to corrosion

➡️ Increase with: Alkalinity Increaser / Sodium Bicarbonate

Too high?
⚠️ pH becomes difficult to control
⚠️ Can contribute to cloudy water & scaling

💧 Dilute with fresh water
Alkalinity doesn’t get “used up” - it needs to be diluted.

💡 Pool Tip:
Test & adjust alkalinity before pH.
