🌧 During heavy rainfall, there are a few important steps you can take to protect your home from wastewater backflow. This can happen when the sewerage network is inundated by stormwater.
▪️Check your overflow relief gully (ORG)- it is an external plumbing fixture (like pictured) that helps prevent backflow into your home. The grate should be left uncovered and should be easy to remove.
▪️Check your stormwater drains aren’t connected to your sewerage or your ORG- this can cause inundation not just for you, but for your neighbours
▪️Internal fixtures such as bathroom drains, sinks and closed toilet seats can also be covered and weighed down with a sandbag or similar.
🚽When the wastewater network is at higher flow levels, you may also hear your toilet gurgle. This normally means the ORG is doing its job and is only cause for concern if you have a blockage in your property’s sewerage line.
