Week #2: Tillandsia (aka living air plants)

Tillandsia are a very cool member of the bromeliad family. They only use their roots to fasten to rock/trees and obtain all their nutrients and water through their leaves!

Tillandsia are endemic (native to) northern Mexico and south-eastern United States, Mesoamerica and the Caribbean to mid Argentina.

There are close to 600 species and many more varieties of tillandsias to choose from in a huge range of sizes with some having startling flowers.

Most tillandsias grow to between 3cm to 20cm with some larger specimens to 1 meter.
Maturity (flowering) may take 5 to 20 years from seed depending on species.

Tillandsias require regular watering or misting every 1-4 days, and do best with a good soak once a week when kept indoors (twice if kept in a shade or greenhouse) in summer and once every 2-3 weeks in winter.

A very weak dose of plant food (1/3 normal strength)
in the water monthly will speed up the growth of the plants.

If you're after a low maintenance plant that looks beautiful then Tillandsia are for you!

And remember, If you're planning a getaway and want to make sure your plants are well cared for while you're away, give us a call or message today 👌🌱

***Species Spotlight***⠀

Each week we'll have a look at some well known (and not so well known) plant species that call our living rooms, entertaining spaces, greenhouses and gardens, home.⠀

Week #1 Fiddle-leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata)⠀
A species that has become extremely popular of late, the fiddle-leaf fig is a member of the mulberry and fig family Moraceae.⠀

It originates in from the lowland tropical rainforests of western Africa, from Cameroon to Sierra Leone.⠀

For those of you who do have a fiddle-leaf do be aware the plants can grow BIG, up to 3 meters indoors and between 12- 15 meters tall outdoors!⠀

Its leaves are broad and variable in shape, but do resemble a lyre or fiddle (from where it gets its common name) and can reach up to 45cm long and 30cm across!⠀

Be aware the leaves of this plant are toxic to cats and dogs.⠀

Fiddle-leaf figs can be a bit finicky, they require indirect light, love to be watered well but don't like their feet wet & appreciate well draining soil. They like to dry out slightly between waterings and love humidity.⠀

If you like the idea of keeping a fiddle-leaf fig, but are apprehensive about their care, Wet My Plants has you covered, let us care for your leafy babies so all you need to do is sit back and enjoy! 😄🌿👌
