Last week we were called out to help an elderly couple who had been left without gas for nearly a week. The gas company had shut it off due to a leak and advised they needed a licensed gas plumber to carry out testing and repairs before restoring supply.
Another plumber had already attended and told them their entire gas line needed replacing in copper — quoting almost $6,000.
After speaking with them, we offered to inspect and test the system properly, as something didn’t sound right. On attendance, we found the gas line had been upgraded not long ago and was in good condition. After a full test, the issue turned out to be a leaking hot water gas valve.
We repaired the leak, re-tested the system (no further leaks found), and got their gas safely back on — for under $1,000.
Unfortunately, there are still trades out there who take advantage of people, especially the elderly. For us, it’s about honesty, trust, and doing the job right — not just chasing a dollar.
