Wondering if that wall in your house is load-bearing? Here's what actually happens when we open up the roof to check.

We look at ceiling joists versus roof load, then bring in an engineer to calculate exactly what size beam and tie-downs are needed.

As builders, we build to spec, but the engineer's assessment is what makes it official. Budget-wise, expect anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000+ depending on whether new footings and steel posts are needed.

From there it's usually a two to three day build, but getting steel posts and footings in can add time and cost.

Structural beams are one of those jobs where the prep work matters more than the install itself.

We took home FOUR awards at the Master Builders Queensland Central Queensland Housing & Construction Awards 2026:

Another update from our Campbell Street project. With three toilets, a master ensuite, and a solid floor plan taking shape, this is turning into a seriously spacious home. Trusses and frames are going up next month, and we're pushing hard to get to lockup before the year runs out. Once this one's wrapped and rented, we'll shift focus to subdividing the block and building a duplex on the second lot, so stay tuned for more.

Most people never think about what's happening behind the wall before it gets backfilled.

This corflute layer protects the waterproofing membrane so the stone going in doesn't puncture it.

It seems like a small step, but retaining walls are brutal to fix once they fail.

Even on walls that aren't structural, if water gets through, it'll push the paint off in a few years.

A few extra minutes now saves years of problems later.

On this job, the brackets were set wrong, so the gutter was holding around 10ml of water instead of running it off.

The fix is adjusting the brackets to create a proper slope toward the downpipes, especially important here since the water needs to clear away from retaining walls and concrete paths below.

Mistakes happen on every job; what matters is knowing how to spot them and fix them properly.

We pulled 12 months of client inquiry data to find out what people actually worry about most before hiring a builder.

Communication topped the list, not just getting a call back, but a builder who follows through on exactly what they said they'd do.

Quality was next, which almost always comes down to how clearly the vision gets communicated through plans, scope of work, and honest conversations along the way.

The third was surprising: living through a renovation with only one kitchen or bathroom is genuinely hard, which is why we offer clients a fully furnished house to live in during their build.

If you're planning a renovation, knowing these three pain points upfront can save you a lot of stress in choosing the right builder.

Most roof leaks two years down the track trace back to one thing: how the screws were installed, not just how many.

Impact drivers are fast, but they overdrive and damage the screw heads, which lets water sneak in over time.

That's why on every job, we hand-tighten each screw with a tension wrench and torque it to spec instead. It takes longer, but it means every fastener seals properly and holds up long after the crew's gone.

A few extra minutes on install day is what separates a roof that lasts from one that's calling you back in 24 months.

Ever wondered what actually stops water getting in behind your cladding?

It comes down to details like this:

Before any cladding goes on, a weather-resistant barrier (what a lot of older tradies still call sarking) goes over the frame first.

On this job, we're using Orcon and finishing off the flashing details around the cavity closures. The little folds might look minor, but it makes sure any water running down the wall gets directed out the front rather than sneaking back underneath the flashing.

Get that wrong, and you're setting up a slow leak that won't show up for years. Get it right, and you've also tightened up the home's air seal and closed off entry points for insects and moisture at the same time.

It's not a flashy part of the build, but it's one of the details that separates a home that performs well for decades from one that causes headaches down the track.

Last night we swapped the tools for ties and trophy's. Its great to get recognised in the industry for the work we all put in and how much effort goes into renovating someones house into a home.

This is not one bit possible with an awesome team around us. Sometimes it takes upwards of 30 people+ to deliver on a clients vision between sub contractors, suppliers,designers, engineers, husband and wife's.

I've come to learn over the last few years, support the people that support you, here is just a small snippet of some of the team from last night.

These awards are the testament of what we can do at refined space and I really appreciate the effort everyone puts in to make this happen as a team to deliver something great for clients and giving them a product they deserve and turning there dream into a reality!

Special shout out to lana for all the support behind the scenes that only another builders wife would understand!
