Garden Tip Tuesday!

As fruit starts to ripen the birds enjoy it often before we get to, but draping some tinsel, hanging old CDs or buying reflective scare tape can help deter them. Birds get confused when they see shiny things, so use this to your advantage.

Propagating PART 2 It’s fun experimenting in the garden to see what works - You can easily multiply your favourite perennials such as dianthus, salvias, daisies etc.

Plant propagation can be done in a few ways: In water, in soil, or by seperating baby plants. It’s a great low cost way to make gifts for friends, create heirloom family plants, and restart an overgrown or struggling plant.
*Checkout the last Tuesday Tip for water propagation*

1. Fill small pots with soil and take a healthy 10cm cutting from your plant. Remove all but the top few leaves, then using a pencil create holes for your stems.
2. Before planting you can dip your cuttings into a synthetic hormone gel to encourage growth, but most of us don’t keep it on hand – so you can try honey or cinnamon too!
3. Water gently and place in a bright shaded spot. Ideally cover each pot with a plastic bag or bottle to retain moisture. In about a month give them a slight tug to see if they’ve developed roots and then they can be transplanted. I’d love to hear how you go!

Propagating = Free plants!
Plant propagation can be done in a few ways: In water, in soil, or by separating baby plants. It’s a great low cost way to make gifts for friends, create heirloom family plants, and restart an overgrown or struggling plant.

Most common house plants will grow roots when propagated in water:
1. take a cutting around 10cm long, cut right below a leaf node this is where the new roots will grow.
2. fill a bottle/jar with room temperature water and add your fresh cutting so the node is below the water line.
3. place the jar on a windowsill with plenty of bright, indirect sunlight and ...wait!
Change the water regularly and leave plants in water until roots are at least 2 inches long, then transfer to a small pot with fresh soil.

Some plants like spider plants take root very quickly, others can take much longer.

Leaving plants in water can work for some, but they won’t get nutrients required from the soil so may require liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy growth.

We (collective “we” 😉) had a great time overhauling the veggie patch before the rain. The kids had planted seeds and watched them grow in planter trays so it was time to give the seedlings some more space to grow.

Gardening can be a fantastic way to encourage little ones to enjoy some fresh air and appreciate the beauty of nature. They can join in the experimenting process – just be prepared for bathtime afterwards!

How do I water? Long deep soakings are far more important than regular short ones! This encourages plants to send roots deep to chase the water. In our hot summers the deeper roots will stay moist for longer than roots in the upper soil that dries out quickly - So you’ll be less likely to loose your favourite shrubs if you get ahead now!

Make sure you check your young vegetable seedlings for pests; snails in particular can be very active at this time of year.

Companion planting can help control pests – it’s all about taking advantage of the relationships between two or more plants. Basil and Tomatoes are a great paring – Basil loves the shade underneath the tomato and helps to repel bugs from the tomato bushes!

Planting marigolds around your vegetables can help limit caterpillars because they don’t like the scent of marigold flowers.

🌱 Garden Tip Tuesday 🌱
Gardens are filling with colourful displays as the days start to warm back up again. So take a moment to go outside an enjoy the fresh air, blossoms and birdlife today - It's so great for your health and there's so much to see!

Did you know that trimming flowers when they die encourages even more flowers? This is because the plants really want to produce seeds.

It’s also a great time to cut back any overgrown shrubs or trees. Find a node or bud and cut just above it then water well. This allows the plants to recover with minimal stress.

Who’s ready to plant? It’s a perfect time to plant flowering annuals and veggies. We love sunny spring days and the occasional wet ones sure help with the watering!

Now is a great time to start your veggie patch ready for summer crops – What are your favourites? Tomatoes, peas, lettuce, beetroot, carrots, zucchini, capsicums, silverbeet, beans and chillies.

Local nurseries have a large array of annuals, wildflowers and veggie seedlings so go enjoy the sunshine or give me a call to help plan out your garden space.

Extra tip: Don’t forget to add in the organic matter and compost to nourish your soil. It not only provides nutrition but also helps with water retention.

Early blossoms are starting to show... Spring is in the air! But so are the weeds as wet conditions and sunshine boost growth.

So if pruning and fertilizer are done for winter then MULCH MULCH MULCH – it’s a great time to lock in the moisture and nutrients with a good thick layer of mulch.

This helps to keep the weeds under control and improves the soil in preparation for the dry summer months.

If your weeds are already a problem, clear them out and mulch as soon as possible before it gets worse!

Give me a call to help and your future self will thank you as you enjoy your garden more than ever this spring.
