A young bloke rang me looking for an electrical apprenticeship and started the conversation by calling me “sir”.
Mate… steady on. I’m not that bloody old. 😂
But here’s what impressed me.
He was actually picking up the phone and calling businesses.
That takes guts and he was having a crack.
The coachable moment was around making those calls count.
Rather than randomly searching “electrician” on Google and ringing everyone, spend some time researching the businesses first.
Find out who they are, what work they do, where they work, who runs the business and why you’d actually like to work there.
Keep it practical too. If you haven’t got your licence yet, think about how you’re actually going to get to work every morning. There’s no point finding the perfect apprenticeship if getting there every day isn’t realistic.
A little bit of research means when someone answers that phone, you’ve actually got a reason for calling them.
This is exactly why we’re building what we’re building around SEEN → BELIEVE → BECOME → BELONG → LEAD.
Sometimes a young person just needs someone to see the effort they’re making and give them a bit of direction.
If you know a young person trying to get their foot in the door, send them this video. If the message resonates, give it a share.
