ASHGROVE RETAINING WALL PROJECT 🏗️

Another engineered retaining wall project completed for happy clients in Ashgrove.

This project involved a 1,400mm maximum-height engineered retaining wall, with some challenging site conditions to work around.

🔹 Limited machinery access between two dwellings
🔹 Unstable ground conditions requiring preparation and stabilisation to create safe machinery access
🔹 Council mains sewer and stormwater assets running through the property, requiring careful excavation and planning
🔹 Construction of an additional retaining wall at the rear to raise and level the backyard
🔹 Engineered construction completed to specification

Challenging access and site conditions are all part of the job. With the right equipment, preparation and experience, we were able to get the project completed safely and deliver a great result for the clients.

⚠️Thinking about building a retaining wall?⚠️

Retaining walls are structural works, and engineering, building approval and specific construction requirements may apply depending on the height, location, site conditions and proximity to homes or other structures.

Importantly, the 1 metre rule isn’t necessarily just the retaining wall height. If a fence is constructed above the retaining wall, the combined height of the retaining wall AND fence must be considered.

There are also requirements around excavation, imported fill, boundaries, nearby retaining walls, homes and dwellings, and council assets. The location of buildings, sewer, stormwater, water services and easements can all affect the engineering and approvals required.

Licensing matters too. For retaining wall work requiring building approval, a trade licence alone isn’t enough - the contractor must hold the appropriate QBCC BUILDER licence for the work.

Retaining walls carry significant loads. Getting it wrong can result in movement, failure, damage to neighbouring property or infrastructure - and costly rectification.

💪Out with the old timber retaining walls and in with a durable, engineered solution built to last.

✅ 16m x 800mm high Trendstone block retaining wall constructed over a reinforced concrete footing, creating a premium feature wall for the front garden.

✅ 10m x 800mm high charcoal concrete sleeper retaining wall installed along the LHS access, providing maximum strength while ensuring the side access remains open and functional.

⏱️ Completed in just 3 days.

The finished result has completely transformed the property with a modern, low-maintenance retaining system, and most importantly, our client was extremely happy with the outcome.

From failing timber to built to last. 💪

We just love a challenge and this job most definitely had its challenges. Not only was there limited access, the soil conditions were EWR (Extremely Weathered Rock). Our little 2 Tonne excavator was the only machine that would fit down this 1m wide access. With hard manual labour, jackhammer assist and dedicated rock equipment we managed to get the job done!

1800mm high engineered and certified retaining wall has completely transformed the space while providing a strong, long-term solution.

This 1400mm high concrete sleeper retaining wall was fully engineered, certified and council approved, ensuring a strong, compliant solution built to last.

The original timber retaining wall had reached the end of its service life, so we demolished it and replaced it with a new concrete sleeper retaining wall, giving the property a cleaner look and a long-lasting solution.

This project wasn’t without its challenges. Extremely weathered rock was encountered throughout the excavation, requiring a dedicated rock auger and jackhammer assistance to achieve the required pier depths. Existing stormwater services also meant sections of the excavation had to be completed by hand to avoid damage.

As with every retaining wall we build, the focus isn’t just on what you see, it’s what’s behind the wall that counts. A complete drainage system with 20mm drainage gravel was installed to relieve water pressure and maximise the lifespan of the wall.

Another failed retaining wall replaced and built to last. 💪

This retaining wall was only around 10 years old, but unfortunately it had already failed.

From what we observed during demolition and excavation, the failure was likely caused by inadequate drainage behind the wall, which allowed hydrostatic pressure to build up over time. We also encountered Extremely Weathered Rock (EWR) during excavation, and it’s possible the original foundations did not achieve sufficient embedment into competent material, which may have also contributed to the wall’s failure.

Water is one of the biggest enemies of any retaining wall. Without the correct drainage system, including 20mm drainage gravel, geofabric, agricultural drain pipe and a legal point of discharge, pressure builds behind the wall, significantly increasing the risk of movement and failure.

We removed the failed wall, excavated for the new engineered foundations, installed new galvanised steel posts and concrete sleepers, and ensured the wall was built with the correct drainage system and foundation depths in accordance with the engineering design.

A retaining wall is only as good as what you can’t see behind it.
