Spinifex Hill Studio Spinifex Hill Studio stands on Kariyarra Country in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

With a focus on painting, the Spinifex Hill Studio provides beginner, mid-career and established Aboriginal artists with access to materials, creative and professional training and arts education to bolster their knowledge and empower their practice. The Spinifex Hill Artists (SHA) began in 2008 after a series of community workshops organised by FORM with the support of Irene Coffin, Max George an

d members of the Mothers Against Drugs group. In a short time the group has blossomed into a significant indigenous Western Australian arts group. The Spinifiex Hill Studio currently welcomes Aboriginal people of any artistic ability to the studio and also offers regular workshops, professional development and marketing education to empower artists as individuals and as a collective. In 2014 the Spinifex Hill Studios will run a dedicated professional development program for established and emerging Aboriginal artists in the region. The new centre represents a firm foundation for Hedland’s Aboriginal art community, and has potential to become a key part of the Pilbara’s cultural and tourist infrastructure. The Studios will also sharpen its focus on public art though the Land.Mark.Art program. Piloted in 2009, Land.Mark.Art is a creative professional development model that builds new skill, income and employment opportunities for Aboriginal artists. Researched, designed and delivered by FORM in partnership with Urban Arts Projects, Land.Mark.Art enables visual artists to evolve their skills to large scale, three-dimensional artworks for the public realm via a structured learning process. Back at home we have been kicking some serious goals with three Spini artists winning NAIDOC awards through Julyardi and the Pilbara Development Commission.

Rekeshia Goodwin one the Cultural Female of the year, Beryl Ponce won the Contemporary Artist of the year award and Doreen Chapman won the Artist of the Year award.

We are incredibly proud of these wonderful amazing women!!!!!

Winner! Of the 2026 Jury Art Prize.
Congratulations Mayiwalku ❤️

This painting depicts Mayiwalku’s ngurra (home Country, camp); the land she walked as a young child. Her Country, the Manyjilyjarra region, is located within the central Great Sandy Desert of northwest Western Australia. Features of the landscape are here portrayed aerially with geographical familiarity, including tali (sandhills), warta (vegetation), and the many life sustaining water sources known intimately through both real life experience and the recounting of jukurrpa (dreamtime) narratives.

May’s artwork is one of many we have the privilege of seeing be created, selling, sharing. Hers works bring joy and happiness to us through her colours and stories. We love having her in the studio and we are very very happy for her to win this prize.

2 days of PD with the NIAF team done and dusted for Eldride and Asharni over in Gadigal Country. Lots@of eating and learning and sharing and making!!!

Now to get ready for the art fair…. Totally blown away by the incredible venue when we popped in this evening to drop off the artworks. Always in awe of the amazing NIAF team. It’s sure to be a good one.

Sydney people- get down this weekend to grab a special Spini artwork from us in person!! We also have our special AACHWA Make it Real merch make its first interstate debut!!
