Quiet on approach, expansive within.

Perched above Kingston Beach, this home steps with the hillside, revealing panoramic, tree-framed views across the water. A durable outer shell shelters a series of warm, tactile spaces shaped around family, gathering, and the rituals of everyday life.

Designed for longevity and adaptability, the house embraces both the demands of the site and the evolving needs of its occupants.

With documentation nearing completion, we’re looking forward to seeing this project move from drawing to dwelling, and to watching it come to life for our clients in the months ahead.

“Declutter my life.”

That was the brief.

Riverview House responds not by expanding,
but by resolving.

Within the same footprint, circulation is unlocked.
Spaces connect, flow, and flex with ease.

Organic lines meet tactile materials.
Storage becomes architecture.
The ordinary disappears.

No more space — just better space.

Broadwaters (Tiff’s Place) is a sensitive renewal of a 1970s SWT Blythe–designed home in Sandy Bay.
Studio Ilk’s work focuses on light-touch interventions that clarify, repair and quietly extend the life of the existing building—allowing its original qualities of light, proportion and connection to place to remain at the forefront.

A modest recalibration for contemporary living, grounded in care for what was already there.

A modest addition to The Shepherd’s Cottage — a colonial Georgian sandstone home.

The new work hugs the ground plane, slipping quietly beneath the existing eave, allowing the cottage to remain the dominant presence. Replacing a dilapidated lean-to, a palette of soft, natural materials gently contrasts the permanence of the stone — improving comfort and performance while remaining secondary to the original fabric.

We’re looking forward to seeing this one take shape over the coming months — enhancing liveability for our lovely clients, while retaining the character, history and quiet quirks of this charming cottage.

A Contemporary Gesture

Today we received planning permission for a new pool and garden terrace at a significant Hobart residence, a place where heritage, landscape, and memory converge.

The proposal is a quiet addition: a contemporary layer drawn into the rear garden, held low and calm so the original house remains the anchor. More terrain than object, it is shaped by restraint — architecture that settles rather than announces.

Tucked beneath the canopy and beyond the public eye, the terrace and pool preserve the site’s enduring vistas — including those once captured by John Glover. A gentle new room for outdoor life, carefully threaded into the next chapter of a remarkable home.

A quiet study in materiality to kick off 2026!

A heritage alteration and addition where old and new are in careful dialogue — honouring existing fabric while introducing contemporary elements with clarity, warmth and restraint.

This materials board is where intent becomes tangible: a considered balance of texture, tone and longevity, shaped as much by what is retained as what is added.
Timeless, tactile and grounded in place.

As 2025 draws to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect.

It’s been a big year — busy, rewarding, and at times challenging. We’re deeply thankful for our clients and collaborators who continue to place their trust in us, and for the privilege of working with people who share a genuinely people-centred approach and values aligned with our own.

We also acknowledge that this year has brought real challenges for many in our wider studio community. As always, people come first.

With some amazing projects underway and others in the pipeline, we’re looking ahead to 2026 with optimism and positive energy — and we’re excited to share what’s taking shape in the new year, after a well-earned pause

Howden Pool House taking shape beautifully. With the pool shell and concrete works now complete, the open pool edge and expansive views to the landscape are beginning to reveal the intent of the design. Can’t wait to see the limestone and glass mosaics bring the palette to life, adding the texture and quiet refinement we’ve been working toward. Looking forward to completion in early 2026 — hopefully just in time to catch the last of a long-awaited, elusive summer.
