Feathered friends.. 🦆

Nothing makes me happier than seeing a new little family take up residence in one of our gardens 🥰

The country garden has acres (literally!) of rolling lawns and garden beds, surrounded by tall native karri tree bushland. It also comes with an ecosystem of wildlife, both the prey and the preyed upon.

These little duckings and their parents have found sanctuary in the large lake in this garden, using the water as a refuge from land based predators, and the now established lakeside garden to shield them from above.

The lake also has a floating pontoon fountain to aerate the water for the fish, but seems it's temporarily been turned into a duckling water play park! 💦

Spring days.. 🌱

A few glimpses of sunshine the past couple of weeks has just started to bring out the gorgeous colours in this modern country garden on the south coast 🌸

The surrounding deciduous ornamental and fruit trees are still to bud up, but it won’t be long now until the little green shoots start to emerge!

We love how lush and green the grass is after all the winter rains - framed perfectly by the white gravel path that winds its way through the garden.

Winter brightness.. 🌸🤍🌸

A truly spectacular time for many of our native West Australian flowering plants - the local streets and gardens are quite literally exploding with colour at this time of the year.

Many people believe that winter is the ‘green’ time of the year in the garden as many of the exotic plants traditionally don’t produce flowers (or even have leaves!) right now. However when we look at our native plants, they actually need the rain and cooler weather to give them the energy to begin their blooming cycle - and the results clearly speak for themselves!

This stunning Geraldton Wax (Chamelaucium uncinatum) has created a corner of happiness and light in this garden during the gloomy rainy days we’ve been having. If you have the space, I would highly recommend including some winter flowering natives in your garden or your front verge - and I guarantee it’ll bring a smile to your face next year when the days start getting darker again! ☔

Flower Focus: Helichrysum petiolaris 🤍

The licorice plant has one of the prettiest and most whimsical flower displays, despite the slightly uninspiring name..and being more widely known for its beautiful silver-grey leaves!

During the warmer months, these gorgeous flowers emerge on long stalks held high above the foliage, following the angle of the sun.

Deep green shrubs and dark purple lavender spires are perfect planting companions for the silver/white tones of the Helichrysum. Mass planted or just as a feature, the colour contrast is always a winner 🙌

The delicate flowers last for ages as a cut flower too, making this a perfect addition to your garden if you’re looking for a tough and mostly care free plant that adds plenty of interest all year round. Just be sure to prune regularly to keep them looking at their best!

Soothing colours of nature.. 💚🤎

Raised corten planters are the perfect way to add eye catching focal points and introduce height changes to almost any location. Paired here with a custom built spotted gum timber screen and southwest riverstone tumbled pebbles, the resulting effect is a calming courtyard full of natural colours.

We’ve included a selection of delicate leaved plants to soften the strong shapes of the structures, some of which are already gently cascading over the edges of the planter. Over time, the steel and the timber will age naturally, leaving the colours of the plants to take centre stage!

On the floor, the organic tumbled riverstones have been laid around a series of limestone steppers sourced from the original garden before the renovation. Natural raw materials, organic shapes, and lots of green - makes for an idyllic sanctuary in our opinion! 😍

Views from above.. 🌿

When thinking about what to plant in pots, it’s important to include plenty of textural and tonal contrasts for interest. Here we’ve used glossy white pots and charcoal natural stone pebbles as a complementary base for the planting. Then we added plants with small and large leaves, shiny green and variegated colours, upright and soft weeping habits to make a cohesive design.

Too many variations can look busy, so it’s always best to repeat the plants you select a few times to create a sense of rhythm. In the case of these courtyard pots, the overall effect brings a sense of calm and softness to an otherwise plain white wall. It goes to show that no matter the space, the addition of greenery is always a step in the right direction! 💚

Crowning glory.. ❤️

The Royal Poinciana tree (Delonix regia) is one of the most stunning trees in the world, and even more so when it’s in full bloom!

This beautiful small to medium size tree has a distinctive spreading canopy, full of soft fern-like leaves. In the summer, a truly flamboyant display of orange-red flowers covers the whole of the umbrella shaped crown.

While it is classed as a small tree in height, the Poinciana will continue to grow outwards, so make sure you have plenty of space if you want to include this wonderful tree in your backyard!

Keep an eye out when you’re driving around over the Easter break as these trees are looking especially fantastic right now 😍

Custom concrete.. 🤍

This poured in-situ concrete outdoor table was designed to be a continuation of the kitchen bench located just on the other side of the bifold doors. Being conveniently located close to the main kitchen makes it a breeze to switch up your entertaining from indoors to outdoors when the weather is just perfect too!

We added a slight tint of black to the concrete mix to create a richer and deeper colour. The finished surface has been steel trowel finished, creating loads of interesting patina to both the table top and waterfall side support. The concrete finish is especially robust as an outdoor surface, and will stay looking like this for years to come (plus it's super easy to maintain!)

The outdoor kitchen area behind the table has also been custom designed, with a deep fronted stainless steel benchtop and glossy black cabinet doors in UV stabilised polymer, keeping the overall look modern and streamlined.

When a super contemporary house needs a matching outdoor entertaining space, keeping the palette simple and clean is often the best outcome we think! 🖤

Unique trees.. 🌳

The Melaleuca quinquenervia tree (or broad-leaved paperbark) is such an memorable tree with its thick soft papery bark in a creamy-white colour. During the summer and autumn they are covered with large flushes of white bottlebrush-like flowers, making an especially eye catching display.

The way the fruits are arranged on the branches is quite fascinating too, so even when it’s not flowering, this is still a spectacular tree. Personally I just love the beautiful soft bark that makes it hard not to reach out and touch on the way past!

Often used for street planting and for screening, the Melaleuca quinquenervia is fast growing and is quite happy in a whole range of adverse conditions, including waterlogged soil. Definitely one to add to your short-list if you have a medium to large size garden! 🤍

GYO..grow your own.. 🍅

The ability to produce herbs and vegetables in your own garden is truly one of the most satisfying things to do, and it’s also fairly straightforward to achieve! We were in awe of these incredibly healthy tomato plants on a recent site visit to check in on progress of this garden.

Obviously how much space you have will impact how much you can grow, but even a small balcony space can produce a lot more than you probably think! If you are lucky enough to have a dedicated area in your garden for growing veggies, the options are almost unlimited, as is the potential to have farm to plate food most nights of the week

Steel and concrete planters look great, but can get incredibly hot in the summer sun, so we’ve found timber frames to be a better option for Perth. We also always recommend wicking beds if you are building new vegetable beds from scratch, as this will not only save you a lot of water, but also lots of time as they will be self-watering for days to weeks at a time if set up correctly.

The only really difficult decisions you’ll have to make is how to rotate your crops as the seasons change! 🥬🌽🥦

Mid summer cool down.. 😎

The recent spate of hot weather means that having a pool in your backyard might have become a little more important of late! There’s something special about an expanse of crystal clear water just outside your door. Even if you aren’t in there cooling down, swimming pools can bring a sense of calmness to even the most hectic of days!

Add in a swath of rich green shrubs and trees, and you’ve got a wonderful oasis in your garden to enjoy with family and friends whenever you want.

This particular pool has been custom built and fully lined with deep aqua mosaic tiles. Bluestone edging and a frameless glass pool fence finish off the enclosure, as well as the spotted gum deck off to one side for relaxing under the shade of the trees.

No matter how big or small your garden, there is always an option to add in a pool if you really want one! Get in touch if you’ve been thinking about it, and we can help you design something perfect for your outdoor space 🤩

Summer blues.. 💙

The Splendid Blue Fairy Wren is one of the most distinctive birds in the garden at this time of year, especially if you are lucky enough to live in the south-west!

The males are the most incredible mix of iridescent blues, and are an absolute joy to watch while they constantly flit about the place looking for little bugs to eat.

This little guy was having a great time checking out the plants we recently installed in this rural garden. And he was even kind enough to stay still long enough to let us get a few good photos as well! 😍
