Atlassian Central Tower has officially topped out at 39 storeys, and we are so proud of what the team has achieved together. The world’s tallest hybrid timber tower will deliver 50% less embodied carbon, its mixed-mode ventilation contributing significant reductions in energy use. 
 
Designed by SHoP and BVN Architecture for co-owners Atlassian and Dexus and delivered by Built in joint venture with Obayashi Corporation, Atlassian Central is on track for practical completion in late 2026. 
 
Hybrid mass timber has enabled prefabrication, dry construction, and a faster, lighter vertical build, with naturally ventilated park zones.
 
Achieving this milestone has been both rewarding and demanding; a feat made possible through design innovation and collaboration across the whole project team. We share this achievement with everyone who made it possible.

Melbourne Design Week 2026 Recap: Designing out Waste.

With two dynamic events designed to enable and advance circularity, we hit Melbourne Design Week 2026 with a renewed purpose to design the world we want.

A national platform for design innovation and imagination, Melbourne Design Week (MDW) gathers practitioners, architects, designers and audiences from across Australia and the Globe. In its 10th iteration, MDW 2026 challenged participants and audiences to design the world you want. Our team set out to explore, demonstrate and debate how we might design out waste.

BVN hosted two dynamic events: a design competition for early-career designers at the site of the Richmond Power Station, and a panel discussion and Melbourne launch of our De-fit Guide at the BVN-designed 181 William ‘The Meeting Place’.

The Design Sprint gathered 30 students and graduates who tackled 6 design problems in 5 hours using only salvaged materials found on-site.

We also launched our De-fit Guide at a panel event in Melbourne, led by Sally Campbell (BVN) and Adrian Taylor (BVN), with industry guests Ari Athanasopoulos (Bank Australia / Kiklo) and Paul Rosenberg Vella (ALD Group) joining the discussion on shifting construction materials from waste streams to reuse pathways.

Oakhill College Hilltop Precinct — Commons and Innovation Hub has won the Award for Educational Architecture at the Australian Institute of Architects NSW Chapter Awards, amongst a field of genuinely exceptional work.

The addition of three new buildings at Oakhill College in Sydney’s north-west establishes a renewed heart for the campus, offering a diverse suite of learning environments.
 
The Innovation Hub embraces technology as a tool for learning, research and communication, housing STEM labs, workshops and flexible learning spaces. The first large-scale hybrid timber structure in Sydney’s north-west had its structural components manufactured off-site and assembled on-site.
 
The Commons is the school’s new administrative building, welcoming visitors and staff with a presentation space and outdoor terrace. A cantilever above amphitheatre-style seating stairs creates a shaded outdoor gathering and learning space at the heart of the campus. The canteen puts food and social interaction at the centre of campus life, with a sculptural roof and outdoor screen for whole-school gatherings.
 
“The wellbeing of the students and the concept of ‘building as teacher’ formed a large part of the design approach for this project. The school’s commitment to this approach demonstrates that Oakhill takes innovative thinking, learning and teaching seriously.”

Green Square Public School and Community Spaces have taken out two awards at the Australian Institute of Architects NSW Chapter Awards: the William E Kemp Award for Educational Architecture and the Lord Mayor’s Prize.
 
Designed by BVN and constructed by Hutchinson Builders, the four-storey purpose-built primary school was delivered in partnership with the City of Sydney and SINSW. The integrated school and community spaces bring essential infrastructure to Australia’s densest and fastest-growing neighbourhood.
 
“By integrating shared community facilities and connecting to the surrounding cultural and recreational precinct, Green Square Public School and Community Spaces demonstrate how architecture can support learning, belonging, and social connection.”

On Thursday night, the New Sydney Fish Market took out three awards at the Australian Institute of Architects NSW Chapter Awards: the Sir Arthur G Stephenson Award for Commercial Architecture, the Award for Public Architecture, and the Premier’s Prize.
 
The largest fish market in the southern hemisphere and one of Sydney’s newest landmarks, the 90,000m² building integrates retail, tourism and wholesale operations, establishing a 24/7 community hub where workers, locals and visitors can come together to celebrate the fishing industry on Sydney’s harbourfront.
“Realising the project’s ambition meant developing a building that could carry both the weight of industry and the joy of public life. Achieving that balance of opposing pressures shaped every decision that was made.” Catherine Skinner, Principal, BVN.

The new headquarters for the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) at 15 Sydney Avenue, designed by BVN for DOMA, consolidates a 3000-strong workforce in Canberra’s centre of governance.

The design balances the competing demands of a high-security government institution with a contemporary workplace that is welcoming, flexible and transparent. Spatial efficiency is offset by the generosity of the building’s central atrium, where community and belonging are forged. Ample daylight, landscape views and generous social spaces contribute to a workplace that supports staff wellness. Through its siting and detailing, the architecture acknowledges its place in the radial city and ancient landscapes of Canberra.

We are thrilled to be working with .au to design a new apartment precinct that will transform Blackwattle Bay, Sydney.

The Build-To-Rent scheme will draw on the area’s strong industrial heritage, reinterpreting masonry detailing and contemporary forms for a new way of living. A retained heritage warehouse will be converted into eateries and bars, complementing a vibrant laneway to anchor and support a lively village atmosphere.

In every way, the architecture favours social interaction. Each level contains ten apartments, arranged as two smaller clusters of five around a shared lift core. This will create micro-communities within the building, strengthening familiarity and a sense of belonging on every floor.

Circulation is treated as a social space rather than leftover corridor space, with constant visual connection to the central courtyard reinforcing a shared identity and experience. At Level 7, a communal garden sits at the centre of the building, encouraging informal encounters.

Landscape and art opportunities draw on the earlier history of Blackwattle Bay and its waterways, which historically traversed the site. References to the Blackwattle, which once lined the creeks, are subtly expressed in the textured soffits of the public spaces, creating moments of detail within the larger masonry forms.
