LIGHT × ART - What happens when the artist and the lighting designer look at the same artwork through two very different lenses?

Join Wildly Illuminating and contemporary Australian artist Lara Scolari for a special evening at Lara’s Balmain gallery, exploring the fascinating relationship between art and light.

Created as a formal CPD event for architects and interior designers, this intimate evening will bring together two perspectives on light.

🎨THE ARTIST

Lara will take us behind the artwork to explore how light, shadow and contrast influence her creative process.

How does an artist consider light while creating a work?
What light does Lara prefer to paint under- and why?
How do light and contrast influence colour, depth, texture and the final piece?

💡 THE LIGHTING DESIGNER

We’ll then turn the conversation around.

Once an artwork leaves the studio, how should we light it?

We’ll explore how a lighting designer approaches illuminating art- from colour temperature, colour rendering and beam angles to positioning, intensity, contrast and control.

We’ll also broaden the conversation to look at gallery lighting around the world, and how different approaches to light can completely change the way we experience art.

It promises to be a wonderful evening of art, light, design and conversation- with practical knowledge to take back into your own projects.

An evening celebrating iconic lighting design, new ideas and our wonderful design community.

We had the pleasure of attending the Australian launch of Louis Poulsen at Lucian Lighting’s Glebe showroom, marking an exciting new chapter with Louis Poulsen now represented by Lucian Lighting.

The evening brought together architects, interior designers and lighting designers for a wonderful opportunity to connect, exchange ideas and, of course, experience exceptional lighting design in person.

A highlight was hearing from acclaimed Danish designer Christian Flindt, who presented what’s new from Louis Poulsen and shared insights into the thinking and design philosophy behind the latest pieces.

For us, there is always something invaluable about hearing directly from a designer. Understanding the **intent behind a fitting- how it was conceived, how it controls and shapes light, and how it is intended to interact with a space- **adds another layer to how we understand and ultimately specify it.

And with a brand so deeply connected to the relationship between light, form and atmosphere, experiencing Louis Poulsen illuminated and in person is particularly special.

A fantastic evening of light, design and conversation, surrounded by so many familiar faces from Sydney’s architecture and design community.

The best architectural lighting is often the lighting you don’t notice.

We recently visited the iGuzzini showroom to explore and play with their latest range of architectural lighting- and this is always very close to a lighting designer’s heart.

Why?

Because architectural lighting has an extraordinary ability to transform how we experience a space while remaining almost invisible itself.

It can reveal texture.
Enhance materiality.
Define architecture.
Create depth and hierarchy.
Draw your eye exactly where it needs to go.
And completely change the atmosphere of a space.

Yet, when it’s done really well, you may barely notice where the light is coming from.

For us, the more discreet the source, the more successful the result.

Perhaps that’s also why great architectural lighting doesn’t always receive the recognition it deserves. People might not walk into a beautifully lit space and say, “What incredible architectural lighting!”

Instead, they simply love being there.

And that is exactly the point.

Visiting showrooms like and gives us the opportunity to experiment with new fittings, optics and lighting effects firsthand- understanding not just what a product looks like, but what it can do to the architecture.

Architects & designers: next time you walk into a space that just feels incredible, look a little closer. The lighting may be doing far more than you realise.

Alongside , , and , we explored how light can reveal texture, depth, and the quiet beauty within natural materials—transforming stone into something truly expressive after dark.
Grateful to be part of such an inspiring conversation and to share ideas with creatives who are just as passionate about the intersection of light, material, and design.
