The Cutaway, Barangaroo — a remarkable architectural space where the flooring was designed to respond to the movement and geometry of the building itself.

Sam the Paving Man was proud to deliver the stone flooring works, using Italia Porphyry and Austral Black Australian Granite to create a detailed paved surface that complements the curves, patterns and character of the new Cutaway.

A beautiful example of how stone can quietly support and enhance a truly unique public space.

One stone. Six completely different expressions.

The first image showcases Austral Black in six distinct finishes - each one revealing a different tone, texture and character from the very same stone.

It’s a simple but powerful reminder of how much creative potential can exist within a single material.

Across our collection, this same approach opens up endless possibilities, from a wide range of stone choices to unique and custom formats - giving architects and designers the freedom to create with greater depth, contrast and individuality.

One stone. Endless possibilities.

Lead project installer on the Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway, Mr Shin has played an important role in delivering one of Sydney’s most iconic new public domain projects.

Mr Shin has been part of the Sam the Paving Man team for 26 years, bringing decades of skill, pride and precision to every project he works on.

His experience spans major works including Sydney Light Rail, Martin Place Metro Station, and many more - each one a reflection of the craftsmanship behind our team.

In Mr Shin’s words:

Proud to share that Sam the Paving Man has been featured in today’s as part of Australian Made Week, recognising our work on the newly revealed Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway.

This landmark project features more than 130,000 Australian granite cobblestones, hand-laid by our team to form a striking 180-metre paving artwork.

For us, this recognition is about more than one project. It highlights the importance of supporting Australian quarrying, local stone processing and specialist Australian trades - industries that continue to shape the quality, character and longevity of our public spaces.

Through our connection with and our integrated local supply chain from quarrying to processing to installation, we’re proud to help keep this capability onshore.

Thank you to the and the for sharing this story during Australian Made Week.

Today was a big day at Powerhouse, Parramatta - 28 Melocco Austral Black boulders were delivered and set in place.

Solid granite, mined from the Melocco Quarry in South Australia, each piece shaped by nature, now forming part of something built to last.

Hard to believe this was over a decade ago.

Back in 2011, Sam the Paving Man had the privilege of delivering the installation works for the iconic Forgotten Songs project — a powerful public artwork commissioned by the and created by

Suspended above Angel Place, the birdcages were carefully installed by our team, forming a striking overhead installation that brought sound, story, and meaning into the laneway below. Designed to reflect on the impact of urbanisation on native birdlife, the work reintroduces the songs of species once common to Sydney — a reminder of what’s been lost, and what still remains worth protecting.

Originally conceived as a temporary installation in 2009, the project resonated so deeply with the public that it was made permanent in 2012 — becoming a defining piece in the revitalisation of Sydney’s laneways.

A project that continues to speak, sing, and endure.

Mr Lee — over 25 years with Sam the Paving Man.

As project leader, he and his specialist team have helped deliver some of Sydney’s most iconic places, including the Sydney Opera House, Darling Square and Barangaroo Reserve.

Now Mr Lee and his crew are continuing their work at the new Harbourside precinct by Mirvac — reconnecting with the streetscapes he helped build at ICC and Darling Square back in 2016.

Hand-laid Australian stone at one of the world’s most iconic landmarks.

Across three stages between 2015–2023, our team delivered over 12,000m² of paving at the Sydney Opera House forecourt and podium, including cobblestones, bollards, footings and minor civil works. Using Melocco Calca Red and Siena granites, each cobblestone was precisely hand-laid using custom fan-shaped templates to ensure the paving geometry aligned with the architectural rhythm of the building.
