Although there is no visual damage, this lead (straight from the factory!!) is a FAIL!

Besides a thorough visual inspection of all leads and appliances, we also test everything with a PAT-tester.

For a lead, we test
- the earth continuity, which resistance must be under 1 ohm,
- the insulation resistance, and
- the polarity.

In this case, the IEC lead failed on the polarity test as the Neutral and Active wires are crossed. This could 'lead' (pun intended) to a very dangerous situation: even when the appliance is turned off, the parts inside are still live.

What is PAT testing?

PAT testing stands for Portable Appliance testing. There is no definition of what a ā€˜Portable Appliance’ is in the current legislation, however, the standard interpretation is ā€œany appliance that has a plug attached to it and plugs into a wall outletā€.

Because of this, the word ā€˜portable’ is a bit misleading. There are actually a few categories of appliances that should be considered for PAT testing or, at least, visual inspections:
– Fixed appliances (E.g. airconditioning units)
– Stationary appliances and IT (E.g. printers, computers, sewing machines, ...)
– Cables and chargers (E.g. extension leads, power boards, power adapters, ...)
– Tools and appliances (E.g. tools: drill, angle grinder, kitchen appliances: blender, toaster ...)

Some industries have compulsory testing and tagging, such as construction and demolition, workshops and fabrication, ... and others don't have to... BUT the current legislation states that businesses must maintain electrical equipment in a safe condition. Because electrical testing and tagging is one of the most effective ways to do this, particularly for high risk or large, complex environments, it has become a standard way of meeting this legal obligation.
