MUSA Landscape Architecture

MUSA Landscape Architecture RHS Chelsea Gold medal winning garden and landscape designer. Hi, I’m Ryan McMahon, the founder of MUSA Landscape Architecture.

Creating low maintenance plant and nature filled spaces with year round interest throughout Scotland and Internationally. With over 18 years of experience, I’ve had the privilege of transforming countless gardens across Scotland – and internationally – into thriving, nature-filled spaces that reflect my clients’ unique lifestyles. My Philosophy:
I believe a garden should be more than just a beauti

ful outdoor space – it should connect you to nature, provide year-round enjoyment, and be easy to maintain. My approach blends timeless design principles with a deep respect for the environment, ensuring every project uniquely balances form, function, and sustainability.

I absolutely love this wildflower meadow behind my house!
It started in early spring with cow slips, fritillary and crocuses then the summer wildflowers started to emerge and now it's a fantastic combination of ox eye daisies, clover, campion, ragged robin, vipers bugloss, buttercups and yellow rattle. Not to mention the matrix of grasses and moss, so much moss!
Later in the year there will be lady's bedstraw, devils bit scabious and knapweed.

I love seeing updated from the client for this Dalgety Bay garden I designed and now look after. The plants looks particularly beautiful at the moment are Erigeron, salvias, lavender and the stachys!

I've been volunteering with the to make the town centre more wildlife friendly to encourage biodiversity. We are a small group of gardeners making a small but impactful change to our town.

The whole town centre is our community garden.

I was very lucky to go back to the Chelsea Flower Show for the last few days of planting on the Bat Conservation Trust garden designed by and the extremely talented planting consultant

I was so excited to go back I hardly slept the night before, after one 12 hour day I was done. No idea how I managed last year or how these guys are still going.

All the all about plants gardens are superb this year, everyone deserves a gold medal in my eyes.gardens

Can't quite believe it's been a year since we started building our Chelsea Show Garden. The whole journey spent planning, designing, talking about and finally building it was an amazing experience. I'm quite jealous of this year's designers starting but also quite happy to see from a distance.

Very much looking forward to helping bat conservation garden next week.

If anyone finds my air BnB keys.....please bury them again. I quite like the idea they will be on the showground site forever.

With designers starting their Chelsea Flower Show Garden builds, I'm still happy to see the coverage of my garden from last year's Chelsea Flower Show is on the BBC iPlayer!

Watch my interview with Monty Don and see the garden we created in 9 days for the Scottish marine restoration charity seawilding.

We won Gold and best in category.

A few sketches of a proposed garden in the woods near Edinburgh, currently under construction. Working with who made the trees safe, and resulted in a lot of branches to do something with we decided on defining paths and spaces within the woods by making dead hedges, creating habitat in the process 😁 🐝 🐸 🦎

I believe that plastic grass shouldn't be used, maybe even illegal to install!

WHY? Well, to install this you need to remove the source of life from your garden, the soil, and this will most likely go in a skip. Then you need to put crushed stone down, this is Type 1 and quarried so it has a significant carbon footprint. And then you will cover the garden in plastic grass. All this cost to install plastic grass!

Most people install this thinking it is low maintenance, however you will still get weeds and moss growing up through it and you will need to do some maintenance every year to keep it looking.....well, like fake grass. In summer on sunny days this will get so hot you can't walk on it or have kids playing on it. You will also have to replace it approximately every 10 years and it goes into landfill, not recycled.

Once you realise you have made a terrible mistake, it's costly to remove this layer of plastic and reinstall the topsoil again. So maybe stick to what you have, a lawn or move to a flat.

Here at this garden in Falkirk we are about to remove the plastic grass, devoid of life and replace it with a garden full of life, flowers, greenery and have picked plants that will bring bees back into this barren space. Watch this space!
