It's that time of the year again when Christmas lights make an appearance all across Sydney, adding colourful fun to your festivities and dazzling excitement for our young families. Before you start your outdoor decorating, here are ten important safety tips to ensure your Christmas doesn't begin or end with a shocking disaster.
The Shock Doctors’ 10 essential tips, to keep your outdoor Christmas lighting safe.
1. Never use indoor lights outdoors and ensure all lights, extension leads and power boards are suitable for their intended use (e.g external or internal).
2. Secure outdoor lights well to avoid damage in wind or storms. Neither tape, ribbons nor strings are secure methods of hanging Christmas lights.
3. Always turn off outdoor decorative lighting in rainy or stormy weather.
4. Floodlights, halogen lamps and other high-powered lights will become very hot. Therefore, keep them away from anything that might melt or catch fire.
5. Do not pass electrical leads through doorways or windows where leads might be damaged, or across walkways or driveways where they could easily cause a tripping hazard.
6. Ensure that all your outdoor connections are weatherproof, and fit for purpose.
7. Do not put Christmas lighting around or above swimming pools, spas, water features and never leave leads for lighting in or near water or wet areas.
8. Avoid wrapping lights around sharp metal objects that may damage the wires.
9. Be aware that using multiple high-powered lamps can easily overload your electric circuits.
10. If you are not 100% certain about any safety aspect of your outdoor Xmas illuminations, call the Shock Doctor 0438 716 570 and enjoy piece of mind too this festive season.
