Recently completed is this 4 bedroom, timber framed residence in Turvey Park. The key areas of the design brief were to work within the existing footprint yet create a more functional space embracing open plan living whilst inviting improved connections between the kitchen through to the proposed rear deck. Also on the agenda was to provide an ensuite to the main bedroom.

In order to achieve the brief, decisions were made to create openings to existing walls. With existing press metal ceilings throughout the residence, notably the kitchen and dining room, the endeavour was to retain these features. Due to the roofline, structural steel was required to form the large openings, hidden within the bulkheads, not to disturb the pressed metal ceilings. With this transformation, the former small spaces of the dining room and narrow sitting room have become a central to the flow of this residence, with a secluded storage area doubling as privacy accessing the main bathroom and allowing the kitchen to increase in size and incorporate a breakfast bar into the design.

The result, a space for a young family to enjoy with improved visibility and connection between spaces, increased natural light into this rear zone, a second bathroom to the house and a deck to soak it all in, all without extending the GFA.

Completed Project Alert!

First it was the kitchen, next it was the Patio! The client brief for this project was a replacement to the existing patio in Central Wagga. Being located on the west, and with limited natural light to the living spaces, light and summer heat were key considerations. With the aims of entertaining both indoors and outdoors, finding the ratio of restricting the harsh western summer sun and still allowing natural light to the kitchen and dining spaces to filter through was critical.

The concept developed from a mix of solid roof with battens. Proposed materials changed as the project, resulting in this stunning white powder coated aluminium patio by with the fixed louvers positioned along the fence line, achieving the perfect balance of the design brief. To complete the patio, the Ziptrak Blind installed by creates a screening buffer to the nearby hotel for added privacy and reducing the effects of the prevailing southerly breezes creating a more protected, comfortable entertaining area to enjoy.

Lake Albert Kitchen Renovation

Last month saw a visit to site in Lake Albert. The clients had a small kitchen and wished to renovate. They had an adjoining formal dining space and a more formal living space which was under utilised. The brief was to open up the space, create a more user-friendly space by removing walls between the kitchen and dining space, enabling a larger kitchen to be installed. The result, instead of two separately defined living spaces, the kitchen and existing centrally located fireplace became the anchor focal points this new combined space, with the kitchen now capturing 360o views throughout the house and into the existing landscaped gardens, and providing more natural light into the home.

Walking in on site, eyes were drawn immediately to this kitchen, particularly the large island bench – with strip lighting above – in comparison to the previous kitchen and dining spaces once stood. These new spaces, the kitchen, meals and living spaces, are all still defined spaces, however they connect and change the role in how this residence is operates on a daily basis, like sitting at the island bench with the fire crackling away whilst having a coffee to start the day & admiring the winters morning sun roll through the front garden.

Construction Update 🚧

One of three HHDD projects at construction stage, the Adelonia Theatre is underway with external walls commenced. This small rear addition housing new amenities is taking shape. The first commercial project I’ve documented from concept to council approval.

In early 2018, the clients approached HHDD to look at renovating and extending their holiday home in Talbingo, NSW. The existing residence was a Snowy Mountain Scheme transportable residence.

The brief was to make the residence more user-friendly for the growing extended family accommodating for the grandkids, and with the ideal provision of separation for the clients to escape and retreat to their own area.

The existing residence only contained one bathroom and one toilet, and comprised of a tight kitchen, and four bedrooms. Structure would quickly become a factor when discussions turned to the following question, what if we built up not out? With limited room to extent east or west due to side boundaries and access, and with a sloping site, this allowed for an upstairs extension to fit within the council's DCP requirements, also without being a predominate feature on the street façade. This became a viable solution, provided design could work and we met privacy, overlooking and overshadowing concerns.
Fast forward a couple of months, a design solution is accepted with a reconfiguration downstairs, and a new bedroom, ensuite and deck upstairs. Working with the engineers, we got the all-important stairs, the top landing, new upstairs floor structure and kitchen bulkhead puzzle finally working and we set about finalising the design.

Wonderful to see it complete capturing views to the north from the decks, not dominating the streetscape, being functional spaces, terrific kitchen with the awning window and accommodating the needs of the extended family visiting this home.

Announcing as of last month, HHDD has successfully achieved BDAA Accreditation for Medium Rise Level.

What does this mean? It takes HHDD to another step to becoming a registered practitioner, as legislation is changing for building practitioners including Building Desigers in the state of NSW to reflect other states around the country. Medium Rise Accreditation in summary enables HHDD to design and document residential classed projects; and commercial classed projects to a maximum rise of 3 storeys and a maximum floor area of 2,000m2.

Hamish Hocking Drafting & Design

Hamish Hocking Drafting commenced in mid-2015, as a part-time operation whilst employed permanent part time for a local architecture firm in Wagga Wagga, picking up primarily contract drafting and the occasional residential based projects.

In mid-2017, Hame parted ways with his architecture firm after 5.5 years. A sliding doors moment, should he look for something new or push through with Hamish Hocking Drafting. He opted the second, pursuing Hamish Hocking Drafting solo.

In mid-2019, after becoming a Building Designer Association Australia Member, registered the name Hamish Hocking Drafting & Design, moving forward looking for growth into the future.
