Prepared for storm season? Power outages are part of life on Tamborine Mountain. An appropriately installed generator change over switch makes life a lot easier!

Not every generator is compatible.

When purchasing look for: 1. Inverter 2. No RCD (safety switch) 3. Minimum 4kw capacity to run a house with a biocycle.

SAFETY 🛑 Prepare a well ventilated and weather proof space outdoors to run your generator. 🛑 Never plug a generator into a standard electrical outlet (this can be lethal for you and those in other houses). 🛑 If running leads be cautious of flood water, especially in the dark.

As we move forward to the normal life we cant over look changing the battries in your smoke alarms!!!!
Without power for a long period of time, most smoke alarms will drain the reserve battery.

As an electrician in our environmentally conscious community, I am always interested in maximising energy efficiency. After observing the fireflies at this time of year I can not help but be in awe of their superior energy efficiency.

An incandescent lightbulb emits only 10% of its energy as light; the rest is basically wasted, discharged as heat. New generation LEDs performs much better, emitting 90% of its energy as light. But neither of these is a match for the firefly. With very few ultraviolet or infrared rays, the light emitted by this insect through bioluminescence is nearly 100 percent energy efficient!

We need to continue learning from nature and adapting our skills to improve our environmental footprint.

Locals tip: Fireflies can be easily enjoyed right now at dusk in the Curtis Falls rainforest track (bonus glow worms at the waterfall) and Esme Park (easier access for elderly and young children). It is one of the unique and incredible experiences at our fingertips here on Tamborine Mountain.

Wrapping up winter means spring cleaning your smoke alarm. Dust, pet hair, ash particles, pollen and insect matter can build up on the sensor. Obstructions prevents accurate environment analysis, can set off annoying false alarms and worst of all, fail to alarm in an emergency. When your smoke detector is not running properly it poses a real threat to your family!

The good news is this is entirely preventable with good maintenance.

1. Vents should be vacuumed monthly
2. Test button should be used after each vacuum to ensure it is working.
3. Random beeping should never be ignored – it warrants investigation.
4. Battery should be replaced yearly with visual check of battery housing integrity.
5. The maximum life of an alarm is 10 years but often needs replacing sooner.
6. Legislation dictates that landlords must have already installed interconnected smoke alarms in residential rental properties. When one goes off, they all go off, giving everyone extra time to escape. All other dwellings must transition to full compliance by 2027.

Urgent Warning - Flood waters can damage your electrical installation and wiring. Even once flood waters subside, mud deposits can conduct electricity, making wiring and effected equipment highly dangerous for your family!

• Do not enter any area where the water has risen above the electrical outlets or you suspect any wiring may be under water.

• Do not plug in or use any appliances that have been in contact with water until they have been checked and cleared by a qualified electrician

• Take extra care around your switchboard. The majority of our switchboards are outdoors and can be compromised by water. Rust and corrosion inside your electrical box are a sure sign that moisture could be compromising your safety. If you are in any doubt about your switchboard safety, stay clear and call a licensed electrical contractor.

Power outages are a part of life here in South East QLD. If you wish to use a generator you must be prepared prior to a weather event. Incorrect usage can cause serious injury! SEE BELOW

A licenced electrician will install a ‘generator change over switch’ to the house wiring in accordance with strict safety regulations.

⚠️Never try to power the house wiring by plugging your generator into a wall outlet! ⚠️ This is extremely dangerous and is an electrocution risk to utility workers and neighbours served by the same transformer. It also bypasses some of the built-in household circuit protection devices.

On the Gold Coast, humidity rarely drops below 65%, climbing as high as 75% during summer and then during exceptionally hot periods like we have experienced this week skyrocketing up to 90% 🥵. Let’s count the cost of your comfort.

Running a reverse cycle air conditioning system can cost anywhere from $0.20–$0.70 per hour, depending on the size of the space they're cooling. A small system will probably cost less than $0.35 per hour to run.

Example of annual costs: 💰 A resident of the Gold Coast with 4kW aircon unit uses about 864kWh of power on cooling annually (choice of heating additional). This costs $187 a year when charged the average 21.68c per kWh usage rate. Worth it for our long hot summer? Many have decided YES!

Alternatively ceiling fans can cost as little as 2c per hour to run, which makes them an obvious choice from a cost perspective… but they do not dry or cool the air, simply pushing the air around the room.

Update: Native bees rescued from fallen power pole.

The fallen power pole featured in our previous post turned out to be full of native stingless bees and the most amazing tasting honey! The clients wanted the pole removed so i waited until night fall when the bees had returned to the hive and sealed themselves in, i then wrapped up portions of the pole in a sheet and transported them to a safe spot on my property where they can thrive without danger of the chipper. The colony has adjusted well and are busy harvesting pollens from their new rainforest home.

Caution: Native bees do not handle long distance moves well and should be moved incrementally. Unlike honey bees who handle full sun exposure, natives prefer to be situated in a sunny but temperate spot that humans wouldn't mind sitting in all day. There are a handful of native bee enthusiasts on the mountain that have provided great advice. I look forward to learning more.

Do you have a power pole on your property? You may not be aware that the maintenance and monitoring of a power pole situated on private land is the responsibility of the land owner, not Energex! Don't get caught out like the customer featured in these photos (thankfully no one was harmed but the experience proved costly). SEE BELOW FOR TIPS:

Wood is susceptible to deterioration due to threats including termites, borers, black ants, fungal growths, waterlogged ground, chemicals and extreme temperatures. Over time these factors can lead to degradation in even the best-treated poles.

When wooden poles deteriorate and start to lose their integrity, they can become a significant hazard. If a rotting pole should collapse, it can cause both injury and property damage, not to mention exposing people on the ground to high-voltage cables.

For this reason land owners need to:

1. Ensure sufficient drainage of water flow so no pooling occurs near poles.
2. Inspect regularly for signs of rot
3. When you are having your yearly termite check on the house don't forget to mention the pole to the inspectors and get their professional opinion. (We recommend the local company - East Coast Building And Pest Services)
4. When poles become unfeasible, they must be replaced as a matter of urgency.
