In business, like life - a story is never a straight line and 10 years ago we were determined to make sure it wasn't a full stop. This point proved to be a blessing in disguise.
That day 1 mentality has never left us. It is something we talk about, and more importantly how we act every day. You see day 1 in business, might be scary, but it's easy. Ignorance is bliss. You haven't felt the pain yet, you don't have the scars yet and like a first impression - you know you have to nail it.
10 years later, that focus keeps us in check. There's less ignorance. The bliss comes from the disciplines our scars taught us.
For the last 10 years, LPE has built its reputation and place in the fabric of our communities.
People are consistently repulsed by my grandiose descriptions of the role pest control plays in modern society, but it's the fact that you don't realise the impact we have, is evidence of just how important it is.
If we weren't doing it right, you'd know.
Our team works hard to make sure that the cafe that makes your coffee, the bakery that bakes your bread, the butchery that makes your sausages, the schools and preschools that your kids attend, the public buildings you don't give a second thought to, the production facilities that provide essential local employment, the waste management facilities that process your waste and, arguably more importantly, the homes that you and your families live in are safer and healthier because of what we do .
But that's our job. That's what we're supposed to do.
What takes a little longer to recognise and appreciate is the peripheral impact we have. Supporting local suppliers, contributing to local community organisations and creating opportunities for local people to grow, build careers and support their own families.
No one can explain the sense of fulfilment this can give you, or the pressure it will add to make sure you keep getting things right.
Maybe it's grandiose. Maybe it's hubris. Maybe it's delusion. Or maybe that exactly what is needed to keep getting better?
Either way. I'd like to think things are a little better because LPE has been here for the last 10 years.
