You’re INVITED to the opening night of my wife Anne’s first solo exhibition, ‘Wildscape’.

The exhibition will be held at the beautiful old Mechanics Hall, over the King’s Birthday Weekend, June 7-10, 2024.

The work draws inspiration from our native garden, Anne sought to encapsulate the intricate emotions and nuances observed from a close-up perspective, eschewing broad landscapes for a more intimate portrayal reminiscent of the views cherished by passing wildlife.

Our garden is a testament to natural beauty, sustainability, and native biodiversity. Transforming a blank yard into a whimsical wonderland adorned with Billy Buttons and swaying native grasses, our sanctuary is further enriched by a meandering creek and tranquil pond, teeming with a diverse array of wildlife.

In Anne’s inaugural solo exhibition, aptly titled ‘Wildscape’, she endeavour’s to translate the enchantment of our garden onto canvas. Witnessing the vibrant tapestry of life flourish outside our windows has been a profound source of inspiration for her artistic journey.

We designed and created this beautiful little front garden in Birregurra. Weaving pathways, flowering local natives, and recycled timber seating naturally integrated with the beautiful existing mature eucalypts. Four years on, we just completed the garden's first maintenance, and it was great to see how a native garden, with zero input (no watering) over four years, survives. While the garden would have thrived with regular maintenance, it shows how indigenous plants can survive in the harshest conditions.

“nganggali ngara ngura” - Talking Listening Place.

Working closely with the Indigenous Perspectives Leader at the St Mary Mackillop Catholic Primary School in Bannockburn Humble Ground designed, sourced local materials and constructed a Yarning Circle providing a safe place tfor students to talk, share, discuss, and have a yarn together, a place to build respectful relationships, and a space to enrich students' learning experiences.

The circle creates a powerful space, providing a level playing field for listening and sharing. There’s no pressure of being “in front” of an audience; it’s a level ground for communication and sharing.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have used yarning circles for thousands of years as a place to learn from one another, build respect, and share knowledge a safe place for all to speak without judgement. A collaborative way to communicate, a respectful place to be heard and to respond.

Dreamy images of our latest ecosystem pond build, under 12 months old, everything is starting to settle in creating a native wonderland for local fauna. It’s been incredible watching the number of new birds appear on site: Red Wattlebirds, Red-Browed Finches, Spotted Pardalotes, Superb Fairywrens, Little Grassbirds, Pacific Black Ducks, White Faced Herons, Straw-Necked Ibis, and Rainbow Lorikeets. Just imagine if all gardens supported our native flora and fauna.

First stages of a complete garden transformation in Barwon Heads. The existing exotic garden was removed, maintaining any native species onsite. The concept for the new design is a sparse, arid, coastal native garden that supports local fauna and flora - water-wise and low maintenance—design and construction by Humble Ground.
