Tree pruning in Aireys Inlet 🌊

Living under big gums on the coast is half the reason people move to Aireys, but when the wind comes off the water those trees cop a beating. This one had grown out over the house, so our climber worked through the canopy taking out deadwood and reducing the limbs over the roof, keeping the tree's shape while giving the house some breathing room.

Sawdust flying, tree still looking like a tree. That's the aim every time 🌳

Regular pruning by a qualified arborist is the cheapest insurance you can get against a dropped limb in a Surf Coast storm.

The bit after the tree comes down 🪵

Stump grinding is the part people forget about. A tree gets removed, the stump gets left, and a year later it's still sitting there sprouting, in the way of the new lawn or the fence line. Our grinder takes it well below ground level so you can plant, pave or turf straight over the top, and it's compact enough to get through most side gates.

We do stump removal and stump grinding right across the Surf Coast and the Bellarine, from Torquay and Anglesea through to Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove, whether we took the tree down or someone else did.

Block clear in Barwon Heads 🌳

A big one: a full block clear over on the Bellarine to make way for a new development. Tall gums like these are a serious tree removal, with a climber up top dismantling them piece by piece and everything roped down over the shed and the van below.

We'd always rather keep a tree than take one out, and when that's not an option we try to make sure it isn't the end of the story. Some of the big rounds from these trees have been kept and hollowed out to become nesting habitat for native birds, so the local parrots and owls get a home out of it 🦜

Palm removal on the Surf Coast 🌴

These palms had well and truly outgrown their spot, towering over the deck and dropping fronds over the fence and all through the yard. The owners had had enough, so two of the crew climbed up and took them down piece by piece, roping everything away from the house and the fence.

Palms look easy but they're heavy, awkward and full of water, and there's usually a house, a deck or a pool right underneath. That's a job for a qualified arborist with the right rigging, not a ladder and a hand saw.

Insurance pruning, done properly 🌳

These owners on the Surf Coast were told by their insurer that the tree canopies needed 5 metres of separation from each other and 2 metres of clearance from the house. That kind of brief is where you find out who you've hired.

A tree lopper hacks the tops off, the trees look butchered, and they throw out a mess of weak regrowth within a couple of years. A qualified arborist reads the tree, takes the right limbs back to the right points, and gets you the clearance while the tree still looks like a tree. That's what our climber did here: the insurer's numbers are met, and you'd struggle to tell we'd been.

If your insurer or council has given you a clearance requirement, get an arborist to look at it before anyone puts a saw in it.

Solar panels back in the sun ☀️

Arj up in an ironbark in Aireys Inlet on this one. The tree had grown to the point it was shading the owners' solar panels for a good chunk of the day, which on the coast in winter means a lot of lost power.

Rather than take the tree out, Arj pruned back the limbs that were casting the shade and left the rest of the canopy alone, so the panels get their sun and the ironbark keeps its shape and its habitat value. Ironbarks are tough old trees and slow to regrow, so a careful prune like this should hold for a good while.

If a tree is shading your panels, a qualified arborist can usually solve it with pruning rather than removal. Worth a look before anyone reaches for the big saw.

Block clear in Anglesea 🏡

Not every job is one we're stoked about. This gum had to come down so the new build on the block could meet its Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) requirements, and there was no pruning option that would get it there. So the crew took it down carefully, section by section, roped in over the neighbouring shed.

The silver lining: we kept some of the big rounds and they're being turned into habitat homes, so the local wildlife still gets something out of it 🦉

What a tree 🌳

This oak in Torquay would have to be the oldest and biggest we've come across in town. Two climbers up in it doing a light balancing prune, taking a bit of weight off the heavier side so the canopy sits evenly and the big limbs over the house and pool aren't carrying more than they should.

The thing about a tree like this is that less is more. A qualified arborist pruning to the Australian Standard takes off only what the tree needs and leaves the rest, because every cut on an old oak is one it has to heal. Done right, you can barely tell we've been there, and that's the point.
