Perry Mills & Associates Landscape Architects Landscape architecture - its about connecting people to their environment in a designerly way!

I am a landscape architect with practical skills and a passion for creating sustainable outcomes - a big-picture thinker with an eye for detail! I help land owners and land management agencies to build rich, sustainable and valuable places and communities by getting creative solutions approved and constructed. I do this by:

✓ Listening carefully to clients and stakeholders, using IAP2 engagement

processes;

✓ Collaborating with artists to create landscapes that integrate art and sculpture to make evident the layers of a site's history and the richness of the community and environment that has created it;

✓ Using sustainable landscape techniques, employing natural ecological processes where possible to create landscapes with low embodied energy, biological diversity and a long life, and employing permaculture principles as appropriate;

✓ Using my wide network of specialist consultants such as building designers and architects, ecologists, horticulturists, engineers, and graphic designers, who contribute to projects as associates as needed. I have experience and qualifications in a wide range of areas associated with landscape design:

✓ I have been a senior consultant landscape architect with a number of leading international multi-disciplinary consultancies and boutique design-and construct firms.

✓ I have a range of old-tech & new-tech skills gained in a variety of roles within the landscape/horticulture industry, and am as comfortable with a pencil as a mouse!

✓ Able to work efficiently and effectively with clients, consultants and the public, I empower the teams that surround me with my humanistic approach to leadership. I am seeking projects large and small where I can help clients maximise the values of places, property and people. Can I help you devise a creative solution, and assist you through the process of getting it built?

We're so glad the first phase of the 3.7km Ridgeline Trail between Torquay and Bellbrae is expected to be rolled out by the Surf Coast Shire in the near future, with recent works near Christian College recently completed.
Since 2022, our team has been helping realise this community vision for a 'greenway', and to creating a valued community space that connects people with nature.
We're incredibly grateful for the collaboration with dedicated community members, whose passion has been amazing (and is ongoing) and the Surf Coast Shire for their partnership and support.
This article from earlier this year demonstrates the community's excitement to get this done!

Discover the Shire Ridgeline Trail works connecting Bellbrae, Jan Juc, and Torquay, offering a safer, scenic route for all users.

When a 20 year-old retaining wall at the main entry to the campus failed, we were approached to reimagine this highly visible entry experience.
With our subconsultant team we documented the project for construction, reusing the old retaining wall blocks in the back of the new wall, resulting in a significant environmental benefit.
The experience for visitors to the University is memorable, portraying a creative and sustainable organisation, and it has been a popularly acclaimed project!
Here's the flythrough we created to promote the project.

We're thrilled to announce that Perry Mills & Associates has been selected to develop a Landscape Master Plan for the Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College in Geelong.

This exciting local project provides us with a great opportunity to address a number of landscape issues at the school, including poor plant performance, lack of shade and landscape character.

Our proposed approach will centre on climate change adaptation, with the goal of creating a "cool school" that can withstand changing environmental conditions. This strategy not only aligns with the Department of Education's Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan, but also opens up potential funding opportunities from various government and community partners.

We believe that by focusing on vegetation, water, and hard surface material types, we can effectively mitigate heat and improve the school's overall environment. We'll be looking at initiatives like stormwater management, vulnerability mapping, and improving soil quality to create a more resilient and comfortable campus for the entire school community.

Stay tuned for updates as we begin this important work! sustainability

Perry Mills & Associates: Proud Partners in Viva Energy's New Hydrogen Service Station!

Today marks an exciting milestone with the opening of Viva Energy's New Energies Service Station in Corio – Australia's first public hydrogen refuelling station!

Perry Mills & Associates Landscape Architects was appointed early in the planning phase to deliver the detailed landscape plans that contributed to this landmark project's town planning approval and tender. We developed solutions with a focus on sustainability and environmental integration.

Our work on this 5-hectare site included:
• Careful analysis and management of existing mature trees, preserving valuable indigenous species and enhancing site visibility.
• Strategic reuse of onsite materials, including mulched trees and logwood for habitat.
• Innovative earthworks specifications for weed-free topsoil stockpiles, despite the need for significant regrading to maintain floodwater capacity.
• Designing low-fuel landscaping around the hydrogen plant delivery areas to mitigate fire risk, incorporating recycled gravel and basalt rock stacks.
While the station is now open, we're looking forward to seeing the completion of the landscaping over the next few months, which will reconstruct some of the original open woodland vegetation of the Corio Basalt Plain.

We're incredibly proud to have played a part in this forward-thinking project that sets a new standard for sustainable energy infrastructure in Australia.

I'm looking forward to presenting at the Western Region Garden Clubs Conference at Lorne this weekend.
It will have a really interesting focus on environmental issues, with speakers from ANGAIR and Otways Greening Nursery plus Vasili and Heidi Martin from 3AW.
That will tie in well with my contribution - how to make peace, not war, with nature by adopting some simple Ecological Garden Design ideas.
(Teaser.. I love using flexible & permeable paving options, such as reinforced gravel instead of paved or concrete surfaces. Those plastic rings allow rainwater to return to the soil, are fully load bearing, and avoid the high carbon cost of concrete!)
Not too late to register at [email protected]

Very pleased to have been a part of the team to deliver another great outcome.
It was a really interesting and unique architectural proposal to work with.
We complemented this by ensuring the external spaces are fully functional, and considered the changes in levels, interfaces with adjacent properties and the busy streetscape.
The presentation to the street is fully vegetated, with layered planting of naturally dense fastigiate plant forms, contrasted with horizontal ground covers and emergent cluster of dwarf Eucalypts.

Very pleased to have had a small part in this success - we undertook an onsite design charrette at the Warrnambool Community Garden eight years ago that inspired the group sufficiently to create a beautiful amphitheatre for events in a disused and overgrown quarry.
The project has won numerous sustainability awards, including the Premier's Sustainability Community Champion Award, and launches the space with its first event - Live in the Quarry - in the space tomorrow!
Congratulations to a very dedicated team!

Gardening Australia magazine, November issue, is now in the shops. The article on two Sustainability Awardees, Euroa Arboretum and WCG, is a good read. If the floor of the quarry has firmed up after the rain we will see if it's possible for market attendees to go down and experience the space. Wednesday 3:00-6:30. It should be amazing weather to visit us tomorrow.
