Queensland’s smoke alarm legislation is designed to save lives, and by 1 January 2027, all homes must comply with the updated requirements.

To be compliant, your property must have:

✅ Photoelectric smoke alarms that comply with Australian Standard AS 3786-2014

✅ Interconnected smoke alarms – when one alarm sounds, they all sound throughout the home

✅ A smoke alarm installed in:
• Every bedroom
• Hallways connecting bedrooms
• If there is no hallway, between the bedrooms and the rest of the home
• Every storey of the property

✅ Smoke alarms that are:
• Hardwired to the mains power supply (where required) minimum of one
• Less than 10 years old
• Not disconnected or removed
• Installed in the correct locations for maximum effectiveness

🏠 These requirements apply to owner-occupied homes, rental properties, and homes being sold or leased.

Many homes still do not meet the current legislation and may require additional alarms, relocation of existing alarms, or a complete upgrade to an interconnected system.
