A part designed to destroy itself so your tank doesn’t have to. This can happen within 3-5 years.
This long magnesium or aluminum rod is a sacrificial anode and sits inside your steel tank. Because of basic chemistry, the minerals in the water will attack and corrode the anode rod first.

Your hot water system won't stop working once this corrodes away, but it will start rusting.
Once the tank rusts through, it will leak, and it cannot be repaired. Replacing a spent anode every 5 years effectively resets your tank's lifespan.

Even if your tank still looks good on the outside, if it is more than 4 years old, a look over and quick service can save replacement, and a few cold showers.
