⚠️ LITHIUM-ION BATTERY FIRE EXTINGUISHERS – CONSUMERS SHOULD EXERCISE CAUTION
Consumers and businesses should be cautious before investing in fire extinguishers marketed as being suitable for controlling or extinguishing lithium-ion battery fires.
The ACCC has recently raised concerns about potentially false or misleading claims regarding these products, including claims relating to compliance with Australian Standards and their suitability for use by the general public.
Importantly, the ACCC has confirmed that there is currently no applicable Australian Standard covering the use of fire extinguishers on lithium-ion battery fires.
The ACCC also states that relevant fire authorities advise these extinguishers are not suitable for use by members of the general public due to the toxic and highly volatile nature of lithium-ion battery fires. Their advice is to evacuate to a safe location and call 000, rather than attempting to extinguish the fire yourself.
