AWB Electrical & Marine Services NQ

AWB Electrical & Marine Services NQ Based in Townsville Queensland, AWB Electrical and Maintenance Services commenced operations in 2013. To that end over 90% of our work is returning clientele.

North QLD based electrical contractor, specialising in;
- marine electrical from 12Vdc through to 415Vac, including 110Vac systems.
- LiPo battery upgrades, specialist in Victron systems.
- Genset fault finding.
- Marine AC, including all major brands. Started by Albert Bourne, AWB Electrical an Maintenance Services can cover all aspects of electrical, from industrial through to domestic and every

thing in between. Albert started AWB Electrical and Maintenance Services to fill a gap in the market. A service contractor which knows what they are doing, who is honest with the customer and understands the true meaning of the word “service”. In order to maintain our highest levels of service Albert overseas all jobs with his small but skilled group of staff. Albert has over 9 years’ experience in the electrical industry cutting his teeth on high rise construction then moving through to mining and industrial. Prior to this, Albert worked several years as a mechanic in several roles ranging from car dealership through to forklifts and is also a licensed mechanic. Albert has also worked as an electrical motor rewinder, a skill slowly being lost in Australia. Albert’s fault finding ability is recognised worldwide, having repaired everything from portable grinders, through to industrial soft starters and marine shore power converters. Many times Albert has solved a “problem” that has baffled others. AWB Electrical and Maintenance Services are electrical specialists! In his previous role, Albert started and managed a pump workshop in Townsville producing a monthly turnover in excess $280,000 with a staff of three within two years of opening, gaining many customers including, BHP Cannington, QLD Health, Evolution Mining, Iplex, Vinidex. He also supplied all the dewatering bore pump sets for Cudeco Rockland’s open cut dewatering, over $400,000 worth while saving the customer over $300,000 and placing the dewatering schedule ahead two years. Albert has extensive pump experience, having over seven years hands on experience from failure diagnosis through to system design. During that time he developed a mining pump which is arguably best of its type. Having worked in sewage treatment plants in both mechanical and electrical maintenance has also given Albert extensive experience in wastewater. AWB Electrical and Maintenance Service are pump specialists!

Technology has not only allowed easy access to information and tools but typically cheaply too. Funny enough this has NOT improved outcomes. Why? I believe we are losing connection with our senses. No longer are can you look at something and think “that doesn’t look, smell, sound or feel right”. Instead we have to be told “don’t stick your tongue on that”. These photos show case an example of “sensory” diagnosis of a faulty lithium battery upgrade. A simple 2c post-it note was used to confirm a significant air-gap at the main battery cables which upon further investigation found several other severe hot joins in the system plus incorrectly installed MRBF’s bolted directly to the busbar. None of this work was DIY! No longer are we proud to hold racing cars together with racetape and cable ties, it’s technology’s job to diagnose, wrong its the tradesman’s job.

Worst thing about marine electrical is that rarely is there a job that doesn’t involve some form of contortion. I’m smiling because my back hasn’t body slammed me yet and it’s lunchtime. Second worst thing is finding faulty workmanship from other tradesman. This is a hot joint, one of several we found doing an upgrade on the AC circuits of a boat.

We get asked a lot about soldering wires. For a fixed installation it’s OK, but not for a mobile installation especially in a marine environment. The flux found in most solder accelerates the corrosion plus the rigid/ flexible transition at the end of the solder join typically fails overtime. This is a good example of how solder joins age over time.

Yes we do lithium battery upgrades for boats in 12,24, and 48V. is our recommended system for most of our customers. We find the Multiplus and Quattros are just simply head and shoulders everything else. As a system it just works.

Sometimes when diagnosing faults you get curve balls thrown at you. This was a fault in a system. The customer had a new autopilot installed by another company with the existing autopilot to be purely for back. They were@supposed to be split but you get weird messages like this when they’re not.

Follow up to the last post on the 56’ Viking. Engine data from MTU 2000 engines displayed on MFD’s via engine gateways connected into the Sturdy DDEC harness.
Scope, to see engine data when driving at the upper helm station on the tuna tower. The data is visible throughout all four mfd’s on the boat. This was a significantly cheaper and easier option than trying to integrate additional engine genuine displays at the upper console.

“That cost more than i originally thought”. Found this little gremlin when starting a new Gyro install.
DC rated ELV cable used for a 240Vac marine Aircon installation. This was potentially lethal.
The RCBO safety switch only supplied the Aircon on the boat and there was no earth to the controller or compressor. The earth for the pump was taken from the 12Vdc negative bar and there was no tie to the earth of the 240Vac. To fully write out the extent of how bad this was would constitute a two page size 10 font report with no fuzzy photo fillers.
This is the real danger zone, DIYer’s with enough confidence and knowledge to not bother reading the installation manual.
